A new chapter is unfolding for Sabará Children’s Hospital at the corner of Rua dos Pinheiros and Avenida Rebouças. Designed by our São Paulo studio, this future pediatric complex is set to become one of the largest of its kind in Latin America. The project represents a pivotal moment for the city, transforming the Pinheiros neighborhood into a thriving urban center. Building on a legacy that began in 1962, the hospital will continue Sabará’s mission to create spaces that nurture and promote children's development. “The new hospital reflects Sabará’s core belief: that children are developing human beings and need spaces and processes that support their full potential,” says Cristiane D'Andrea from the foundation’s expansion center. The building’s design reflects this vision. With its oval, rounded facade evoking the comfort of a hug, the architecture emphasizes flow and receptivity, creating a welcoming space for young patients. Stay tuned for the grand opening of this exciting new landmark!

Our West End Labs (WEL) project is "making a statement" on the latest cover of Interior Design Magazine!   Originally built in the 1920s to move and repair cars, the reinforced concrete structure and automotive helix of 125 West End Avenue now move ideas within a fresh physical and cultural framework. Reimagining the look, feel, and systems for cutting-edge research and development, this New York gem on the mostly residential Upper West Side has been adaptively reused and transformed into a modern hub for life sciences. Today, WEL inspires the next generation of scientific discoveries and innovations.   “The charge was to make the building smart, attractive, and effective for potential tenants, to organize it for a variety of start-ups and accommodate them as they grow over time,” says Bill Harris, our Northeast regional director. Close-knit care for a colorful community: Whitman-Walker Health’s new Max Robinson Center celebrates the spirit, resilience, and promise of Southeast Washington, D.C., by expanding care and promoting inclusivity in community health.   The center opened less than a year ago and made an immediate impact. Nearly doubling Whitman-Walker’s capacity, the new healthcare and research facility is on track to provide life-saving care and support services to over 20,000 LGBTQ+, minority, and at-risk patients annually.   It marks our third collaboration with Whitman-Walker, and the design team took inspiration from the nonprofit’s commitment to the communities it serves—reflected in their motto, “We See You.” We’re deeply moved by Whitman-Walker’s mission and honored to contribute to creating purposeful spaces that help destigmatize healthcare for LGBTQ+ and marginalized groups. One of the first things to decide when designing a new building to fit within a historic district is how much to blend with the neighbors and how much to contrast them. This often comes down to building massing and facade detailing. With 150 Holborn, a new headquarters in Central London for Sidara (which includes our local studio), we followed a middle path. Our composition reflects the proportions of the adjacent Tudor and Victorian buildings while expressing the modernity of today's construction systems and the forward-looking culture of the workplace. In this first installment of The Fold, we walk you through the steps we took to define the building’s massing and detail its facade. Learn more about the project on Instagram (@perkinswill) and our website: https://lnkd.in/epVy9JbV 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 '𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗱’?: A periodical social media series documenting the processes behind our award-winning designs. Each post presents a focused look at the steps our teams take when thinking through design problems on behalf of our clients, going beyond finished photography to reveal the research, sketches, diagrams, models, mockups, and designer perspectives that go into translating ideas into realities. Whether it’s articulating a facade to complement its urban context or peeling back the layers of history to reveal the cultural capital of an existing building, The Fold shows you our projects like you’ve never seen them before.

The transformation of Shanghai’s West Bund from a riverfront industrial hub steeped in history into Asia's largest cultural and artistic district is well underway. As part of the regeneration of the area, we recently completed the adaptive reuse of a dome structure that was part of China’s oldest cement production facility, converting it into a unique event venue. The project, known as the West Bund Art Center, preserves key elements of the historic pre-homogenization plant, like the dome’s steel frame and a conveyor bridge. Meanwhile, new interventions, including translucent cladding, a public foyer, and a viewing gallery, cultivate new forms of use and interaction—from art exhibitions and concerts to sports and cultural events. The project was recently featured in ArchDaily. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/gXwVmJnH Designed by our Shanghai studio, part of SHL - Schmidt Hammer Lassen.
