Our organization has a lofty goal: to build on the Permian Basin’s status at the center of the global energy economy by catalyzing the development of new energy technologies and, at the same time, creating value for energy communities. But in a vast region how do we begin to understand what communities need? In our new report, Community Archetypes in the Permian Basin and their Relationship to Energy Resources, Elizabeth Ross, M.S., Gregory Pogue, Jill Engel-Cox and Thushara Gunda explore the strengths and needs of Permian communities in relation to the energy industry. This analysis will provide the basis for assessing, designing and implementing PEDL’s future energy technology research, educational and outreach programs. https://lnkd.in/gJQ3hbDQ

We are fortunate to have researchers like Gregory Pogue from the IC2 Institute working on our team.
We are pleased to share the first report to emerge from the Permian Energy Development Lab (PEDL), a coalition formed to advance the Texas/New Mexico Permian Basin. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gJQ3hbDQ PEDL has three primary goals for the Permian Basin: · Catalyze advanced energy research · Prepare new energy professionals and entrepreneurs · Create value for energy communities A major challenge is understanding the diverse Permian Basin communities —how does one do that for a region that encompasses 51,000 square miles and more than 50 counties? The report offers an answer: Its authors have used socioeconomic analysis to group the Permian’s communities into seven distinct archetypes — these groupings will allow PEDL to engage in community-relevant research and shape future, custom-fit workforce development initiatives. Report authors: Jill Engel-Cox and Elizabeth Ross, M.S. (National Renewable Energy Laboratory), Thushara Gunda (Sandia National Laboratories) and Gregory Pogue (IC2 Institute) Energy Institute, The University of Texas at Austin Brian Korgel #Entrepreneurship #EnergyTransition #EconomicDevelopment

How do you study a region of 66 counties spanning two states? That is the challenge that Elizabeth Ross, M.S., Jill Engel-Cox, Thushara Gunda, and I tackle in the white paper, found here: https://lnkd.in/g7SQHDJz. This article provides a data-informed way to associate counties based on socio-economics, education, health, and energy opportunities, thus simplifying community outreach/research and developing scalable new energy strategies. This work was supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engines program, the Permian Energy Development Lab, IC2 Institute and Energy Institute, The University of Texas at Austin at The University of Texas at Austin. Appreciate the leadership of Brian Korgel and Marilu Hastings in this project, as well as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories. #permianbasin #energytransition #cleanjobs #cleantech #circulareconomy #communityresearch

A personal reflection on community-engaged research, the energy industry, and opportunities for positive change in the Texas / New Mexico Permian Basin: https://lnkd.in/gnTDgkps. How can data unlock unexpected community similarities across a region >75.000 sq. miles, 66 counties, and two states? Interested...take a look at the blog or read the full white paper, here: https://lnkd.in/g7SQHDJz. Bringing investment, expertise, and new technologies to the Permian Basin—an area that's already a hub for energy innovation—those goals are central to our work. That's why we're thrilled to announce a new partnership with Agile Energy X, a cutting-edge Japanese technology firm. A subsidiary of Tokyo Electric Power Company, Japan's largest electric utility, AEX will bring its "ultimate circular economy" concept to the Permian. The idea is to create a closed-loop energy system, combining clean energy technologies like direct air capture and distributed computing with renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. The goal is to bolster energy production by minimizing waste and optimizing resource use. "PEDL is a platform for visionaries from around the world to come to turn their ideas into reality," said our founder and board president, Marilu Hastings. "This partnership exemplifies the Permian Basin's draw as a hub for energy innovation. That's the essence of the Texas spirit—a place where people with bold ideas can build the future." https://lnkd.in/gj6QA2q4 Brian Korgel Kenji Tateiwa 立岩 健二 Kyle Simpson

PEDL has again broadened its collaborative network this month, signing four new memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with innovative energy companies. These partnerships with CleanCo Energie, Inc, EarthBridge Energy, Melzer Consulting and Omnia Midstream Partners complement our existing relationships and accelerate our mission to drive advanced energy innovation in the Permian Basin. "These new partnerships bring together some of the most innovative minds in energy," said Marilu Hastings, president of the PEDL board of directors. "We're not just talking about the future of energy – we're building it in the Permian Basin, creating opportunity for communities in the process." Each partner brings unique expertise: CleanCo Energie in crop agrivoltaics, EarthBridge Energy with grid-scale energy storage technology, Melzer Consulting's deep geotechnical know-how and Omnia Midstream Partners' expertise across solar integration, helium recovery and CO2 sequestration. These collaborations enhance PEDL’s capacity to develop and deploy cutting-edge energy technologies that benefit our region and beyond. "The Permian is on track to be a global hub for advanced energy innovation and a model for other energy intensive communities," Hastings added. "Our role is to accelerate that process and make sure the benefits flow to the people who live and work here – and to the US economy." https://lnkd.in/g3sFAnTZ

In the heart of the bustling #oilandgas activity in the #Permian Basin, a visionary super #greenenergy project is taking shape. The Permian Energy Development Lab (#PEDL) is integrating various green energy solutions, from #solar power and #hydrogen production, to carbon capture and storage (#CCS), and TEVERRA's subsurface thermal #energystorage. This project encompasses R&D, #partnerships, #workforce development, inclusive engagement, governance, and investment. #Teverra is a proud partner on the project, and I had the pleasure of attending a meeting and visiting the site and facilities this past week. Very impressive! Thanks to partial funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and The Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation. Kudos to Kyle Simpson, Brian Korgel, Andrew Sullivan, and many others for organizing the meeting. It was also great to see Dr. Alan J Cohen after a long time. The new #energy revolution is ongoing, don't stay behind!
