Our latest attendance at the Ophthalmology Innovation Source meeting in San Diego.👇
I attended the Ophthalmology Innovation Source in San Diego, which is all about therapies in ophthalmology. I met many innovators and learned much about the state of drug development in ophthalmology. Also, I had the opportunity to talk to Carey Powers about PerZeption Inc. for their OIS podcast series, so stay tuned. My great takeaway is that -surprisingly- almost all presentations reported only BCVA as the key vision endpoint for treatment success, which is very limited in its ability to assess the effect of drugs on visual functioning, i.e. whether vision loss stopped and ideally improved post-treatment. I wonder how many products have not made it to market not because of their lack of effectiveness, but because of the insufficient vision assessment used during clinical trials. Overall, I had a great time at the meeting and made many new connections, including Alan Franklin Jonathan Liu Murielle Thinard McLane Aman Mann Leslie Patch, MD MBA FACS, Barbara Wirostko MD, FARVO Abha Gulati Daniel Lindgren Jing-Feng Huang, PhD ken-ichiro "Nobu" K. Paul Karpecki and of course, Robert Dempsey who serves as an advisor for PerZeption and is an incredible mentor.
