My coach said I was one of the most coachable people she had ever worked with. When I told my Mom, she laughed. Last night, at the Pet Care Innovation Prize, William Broun, CFA highlighted the importance of coachability as an entrepreneur. This topic brought up a great conversation later that night about who you should listen to. Here was my take; Being coachable doesn't mean blindly following advice. It means being open to new perspectives, especially from those who share your values and have your best interests at heart. Be open to reframing. The ability to rethink your approach with someone you trust can be the difference between success and failure; without it, you'll never evolve or grow. Find mentors and coaches whose values and aspirations align with yours. An investor's goal might be maximizing profits, but if that doesn't align with your vision of creating impact or maintaining work-life balance, it's okay to decline respectfully. Respect your coach's experience and perspective. If you don't value their advice, why are you even asking? As an entrepreneur, your ability to be coached—to take in information and apply it wisely—is critical. But choose your coaches wisely, and always stay true to your vision.
