Unlocking Strength: The Science Behind Age Hardening Age hardening, also known as precipitation hardening, is a heat treatment technique used to increase the yield strength of malleable materials, including most structural alloys of aluminum, magnesium, nickel, titanium, and some stainless steels. This process involves three main steps: solution treatment, quenching, and aging. • Solution Treatment: The alloy is heated to a high temperature where the solute atoms dissolve to form a single-phase solution. This step ensures that the alloying elements are uniformly distributed. • Quenching: The material is rapidly cooled to trap the solute atoms in a supersaturated solid solution. This rapid cooling prevents the formation of unwanted phases that could weaken the material. • Aging: The alloy is reheated to a lower temperature and held there for a period of time. During this stage, the solute atoms precipitate out of the supersaturated solution to form fine particles that hinder dislocation movement, thereby increasing the strength and hardness of the material.
