The rapid rise of state-sanctioned sports betting has led to more people experiencing problems with gambling. Around 30-40% of online sports bettors experience problems, though a smaller percentage would meet the clinical criteria for full-blown gambling disorder. People within Ohio’s borders wagered more than $1 billion on state-sanctioned platforms the first month online sports betting was legal, losing more than $200 million from those wagers. Since January 2023, people within Ohio (which includes visitors) have lost more than $1.4 billion on sports betting, according to state data compiled by Legal Sports Report. The Ohio Gambling Telehealth Network (OGTN), a subsidiary of the state-funded PGNO, became a reality “more quickly and with more buy-in because of sports betting,” Buzzelli said. The program launched earlier this year ahead of the college football and NFL seasons. According to Buzzelli, OGTN is the first of its kind in the country with gambling counselors, who are based in Ohio, providing no-cost services to residents. “They know the Ohio landscape,” Buzzelli said. #OhioGTN #GamblingTrends #OhioModel #CallUs #HelpAndHope

Problem Gambling Network of Ohio has a free virtual counseling option to help those in the state who are struggling. One in five Ohioans are categorized as either low-risk, moderate-risk or problem gamblers. Michael Buzzelli, associate director of the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio, said the telehealth service offers access to help where you don't need to meet someone in person. He said the free telehealth option helps with accessibility and avoids potential stigma. "If someone's more likely to gamble on their phone, they may be more likely to reserve gambling treatment on their phone or on their computer as well, so, it's also a comfort aspect," Buzzelli said. Both Poliquin and Buzzelli said it's about meeting people where they are at and telehealth can help beat addiction. The option is also for more than those who are struggling with addiction. #OhioGambling #HelpAndHope #WeCare #CallUs

Ohio sports betting surpassed $5 billion in wagers year-to-date, becoming the fourth state behind New York, New Jersey, and Illinois to reach that milestone. The 2024 handle of $5.1 billion is up 13% from the $4.5 billion generated in the first eight months of 2023. August marked the seventh handle of over $500 million this year, with July being the only month under that figure. #OhioGambling #GamblingTrends

Though promotional spend was up 2.8% compared to last year, it only represented 2.9% of the $534.9 million mobile handle compared to the 4.2% of the $364.3 million wagered digitally in August 2023. Some of that can be attributed to fewer mobile operators in the marketplace as there are 14 sportsbooks taking bets now compared to 18 last year. #GamblingTrends #OhioGambling #SportsBetting

Beginning in April 2025, a Mega Millions ticket will increase in price from $2 to $5. The price will spark a “new and improved game” that includes improved odds to win and bigger prizes, lottery officials announced Monday. Mega Millions said that the increased ticket price will cause larger-starting jackpots, as well as faster-growing jackpots. There will also be no “breakeven prizes,” meaning that every winning ticket will be more than the cost of a $5 ticket. “We expect more billion-dollar jackpots than ever before, meaning creating more billionaires and many more millionaires as the jackpots climb, plus this game will continue the important legacy of supporting great causes everywhere Mega Millions is played,” said Joshua Johnston, lead director of the Mega Millions Consortium, in a release. Mega Millions is available to play in 45 states plus Washington, DC, and the US Virgin Islands. #GamblingTrends
