About us
Once part of a mansion row, the home of Sherman D. Phelps is the last of its neighbors. Construction began in 1870 and the Phelps family moved in 1871. The house is filled with marble floors, exquisite carved woodwork, period lighting fixtures, and period furniture. It also houses a collection of artwork, all donated by Monday Afternoon Club members. Sherman D. Phelps was a successful banker, businessman, and mayor of the newly incorporated City of Binghamton. His house is a legacy that tells of a time when Binghamton was growing in wealth, culture, and population. The Phelps Mansion Museum is also an excellent example of the talent of one of New York State’s most famous 19th-century architects, Isaac G. Perry. Perry was also known for his work on the New York State Capitol, as well as many buildings in the Binghamton area.

The Phelps Mansion is looking for volunteers: The Phelps Mansion Museum offers many different ways to volunteer: Do you like public speaking? Become a tour guide! Do you like interacting with people? Become a greeter or help run our gift shop! Are you looking for community service? Come help tidy the mansion, clean up the garden, or do a few office tasks! Do you love history? Come help maintain our archive or research new tours! Are you looking to meet new people? Come lend a hand with our events! Are you an educator? The Phelps Mansion Museum wishes to extend its many thanks to all of you who came and visited the mansion this holiday season. We will be closed from January 6th-15th to allow our staff and volunteers time to clean up the mansion as we prepare for a new year of events and tours. We will also be closed on January 18th due to the Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy shows happening at 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8pm, and 10pm. The Phelps Mansion Museum announced today a grant award totaling $25,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) to support the nonprofit arts and culture sector. Through New York State’s continued investment in arts and culture, NYSCA has awarded $82 million this year to 509 artists and 1,497 organizations across the state.
