Joel has made it clear that his intentions are to spend his entire career with the 76ers, and in Philadelphia, the place in which he has built an amazing young family, and grown into an NBA MVP. In the latest installment of our Women Who Inspire series, presented by Johnson, Kendall & Johnson (JKJ), we’re thrilled to spotlight Leslie Walker, Executive Director of the Sixers Youth Foundation (SYF). Leslie's dedication to non-profit work has spanned her entire career, blending her passion for supporting vulnerable children and their families with her ability to connect and empower communities. Leslie’s work with the Sixers Youth Foundation is focused on youth development across the surrounding Pennsylvania counties (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery), Northern Delaware, and South Jersey, building a network of grantees who support each other and collaborate for the greater good. Leslie and her team believe in utilizing the power of basketball and the influence of the 76ers brand to inspire future generations in the communities where we live, work, and play. “The Foundation envisions communities where all children can create, pursue, and realize their dreams and live productive lives. We support this vision by investing in organizations serving youth within the areas of academic enrichment, play and recreational sports, and play spaces.” Her commitment extends to her family as well. Leslie takes pride in passing on her work ethic to her children, ages 23 and 26, who have embraced volunteering and developed empathy and people skills—traits they inherited from their ever-inspiring mother. In addition to her work with SYF, Leslie believes in the importance of mentorship. For her, mentors are more than advisors; they are listeners who help shape one's path and provide invaluable perspective. “Without such supportive and thoughtful mentors, my professional and personal paths – where I have been, where I am now, and where I plan to be – would not be possible. Regardless of where one is on their path in life, having and nurturing these kinds of invaluable relationships is crucial.” Leslie is passionate about continuing her mentorship journey, believing in its power to foster career development and personal growth. For our next feature in the JKJ Women Who Inspire Series, we are thrilled to spotlight an individual making waves in the sports industry— Magdalene Zerbe, Sr. Content Producer and Strategist at the Philadelphia 76ers. Maggie graduated from Muhlenberg College, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Communication & Media Studies while playing for the women’s basketball team. After college, she started her career at NFL Films, where she worked as a producer intern and then a production assistant, producing content for HBO’s Hard Knocks and Showtime’s Inside the NFL. Today, her role at the 76ers has allowed her to leverage her love for Philadelphia and its rich, diverse community, creating content that resonates deeply with fans and tells stories where we live, work, and play. “Since working for the 76ers, I have found that some of the most impactful work we do is off the court and in the community. The most successful projects have really been about the people behind the team and the individuals who support our organization and the community. From a content perspective, it’s our goal to find ways to tap into the emotion behind the city’s deep love for its sports teams. We have an incredible platform here and the chance to impact far beyond the final score. Finding those stories and doing them justice are the most important wins for me.” In addition to Maggie’s work creating content for the 76ers on gameday and beyond, her desire to work with WNBA players and Philadelphia natives, like Natasha Cloud and Kahleah Copper, to launch projects, such as the 76ers exclusive merchandise line, 76 Originals, exhibits her commitment to amplifying the voices of female athletes. Projects like this demonstrate Maggie’s devotion to expanding narratives and providing a platform for underrepresented voices across Philadelphia. One has been Forbes’ “The World’s 100 Most Power Women” list. These incredible women and their accomplishments have set the bar and anchored my aspirations, motivating me to challenge the status quo. I was the first woman selected to be the head manager for The University of Virginia’s Men’s Basketball Team, pioneering new territory. Post-graduation, I chose, at the time, the unconventional path of ticket sales to start my career in sports marketing with the New York Knicks. From there, it’s been 20+ years of constant learning, embracing the unexpected and striving for excellence. Like another piece of art on my wall now reminds me daily: Be Bold, Brave & Brilliant." Throughout her impressive career in sports, Susan has continuously pushed boundaries. Whether it was going back to school full-time for her MBA or raising her hand for projects outside her expertise, her genuineness, resilience and comfort with ambiguity have defined her leadership style. In 2019, Susan was a recipient of Philadelphia Business Journal’s “Forty Under 40” honors; in 2020, she was selected from an international pool of senior industry executives to Leaders in Sports acclaimed “Leaders Under 40” list. One of the more fulfilling aspects of Susan's journey has been witnessing the success of those she's mentored and managed.
