A new Tech Tip! Convergence (aka figure 8s) at the beginning and end of each mission is an important part of data collection, in addition to IMU alignment. "During this phase, the INS filter is using the observed motion and GNSS information to fine tune the IMU error state estimates"(Hexagon-Novatel). This dynamic movement helps lower the covariances by processing for IMU drift and noise during the turns. By doing these types of active movements, the attitude and positional separation error should be lowered when the software processes the trajectory. The figure 8 maneuvers should mimic dynamic turns that will happen during the mission. "It is recommended to incorporate as much vehicle motion as possible...this includes complete turns in opposite directions, acceleration, [and] deceleration" (Hexagon-Novatel). Try to avoid any high angle turns or sharp corners, which could lead to attitude sensor errors. As long as the sensor is making left and right turns for at least one minute, the shape does not necessarily have to be in a figure 8. It can be in the shape of a "S" or two squares with rounded corners. For more information about figure eights, please visit our documents page: https://zurl.co/ZVVc Hexagon-Novatel. Tech Tip! Static vs. Kinematic Alignment IMU (inertial measurement unit) alignment is a crucial step in mission planning and flight execution. Proper kinematic alignment is critical to obtaining an optimal trajectory. There are two types of IMU alignment: static and kinematic (or dynamic). Static alignment is performed on the ground after startup and allows the IMU to estimate roll and pitch using sensed gravity. It uses the Earth's rotation to estimate yaw. Only IMUs with a gyro bias of less than 15 degrees per hour, such as Phoenix's IMU 33, 52, and 60, can statically align. This is because the Earth rotates at approximately 15 degrees per hour. It is recommended for static alignment to be performed for a minimum of five minutes before and after the mission. Kinematic, or dynamic, alignment is performed for IMUs with a gyro bias higher than 15 degrees per hour. Kinematic alignment is performed in flight prior to the figure 8 maneuvers at the beginning of the mission and after the figure 8 maneuvers at the end of the mission. When the IMU is turned on, it can detect the pitch and roll but the IMU does not automatically know what direction is its heading/yaw. To determine an accurate heading/yaw, Phoenix LiDAR Systems recommends travelling forward for a period of at least 10 seconds, at a minimum velocity of 5 m/s, moving as straight and as level as possible with a clear line of sight. This allows the navigation system to determine initial yaw through course-over-ground. For more information about kinematic alignment, please visit our documents page: https://zurl.co/sZbX. #LoveLiDAR #LiDAR #LiDARtips #RemoteSensing
