We are excited to announce an artist talk with Mark Templeton, a versatile media artist working across audio, video, photography, and appropriated imagery, in partnership with Solas Gallery. During the talk, Templeton will discuss his career, past projects, and photo books, with a specific focus on his latest project, A GUIDE TO INNER LIGHT. A GUIDE TO INNER LIGHT features printed Risograph photographs and repetitive tape loops sourced from discarded slides and '70s and '80s meditation cassettes. The project is set to be published as a photobook and limited-edition cassette in 2025. Mark Templeton is a Canadian media artist and the founder of Graphical, an audiovisual label dedicated to publishing his own musical and image-based experiments. Mark’s audio compositions are constructed from reel-to-reel tape loops and sampled cassettes that are contrasted with contemporary sound techniques. In his published photobooks, he incorporates his own 35mm pictures and found images, focusing on intangible fantasies and realities. During his audiovisual performances, he utilizes digital instruments while projecting his own photographs, VHS footage, Super 8 film, and other sampled videos. Templeton has performed live and exhibited his work at art galleries, festivals, and alternative spaces throughout North America, Europe, the United Kingdom, and China. • In just one week, we'll have our event with Tony Chirinos, a world-renowned photographer specializing in medical photography. This is held in conjunction with the opening reception of The Precipice, a solo exhibition of Tony’s work at The Seattle Light Room. Registration is still open for Building a Photographic Career on Difficult Subjects: A Conversation with Tony Chirinos on Being an Artist, Teacher and Mentor. October 19, 2024 | Saturday 1-2pm Decades ago, Tony Chirinos transitioned from working as a medical photographer to making personal work about mortality, fragility, and the cultural elements that influence how we experience them. Sometimes brutal and always beautiful, Tony’s images have helped him build a successful career as an artist. After years of being widely featured and internationally exhibited, he published his first monograph with Gnomic Books, and in 2023, received a coveted Guggenheim fellowship. In an intimate conversation with Humble Arts Foundation co-founder Jon Feinstein and PCNW faculty and board member Anna Ream, Tony will discuss developing his dynamic bodies of work from idea to publication and exhibition, and how mentorship – as a mentor and mentee – can be an unparalleled path to artistic growth and success. • PCNW is excited to announce the addition of a brand new Development Director to our team! Mia McNeal joined us in May and brings a wealth of experience in photography, business development, administration, and teaching. She’s seamlessly stepped into this leadership role and is already a vital part of our community engagement, program development, and fundraising efforts in just her first few months. Here’s a note from Mia: “I am thrilled to step into the role of Development Director here at PCNW, a place that holds such deep meaning for me. Introduced to PCNW in 2016 while pursuing my Bachelor’s at Seattle University, I spent many hours printing in the darkroom for gallery shows and using the studio spaces for my Client photoshoots. The support I received over the years was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced at an arts organization. During this time, I realized that PCNW is more than just a facility or place to take classes—it’s a home for artistic exploration, where a vibrant and supportive community of artists come together to learn, grow, and inspire one another. As a lover of the photographic arts, I am excited to re-join this community in a new capacity and bring my passion into this role. Continuing PCNW’s mission while driving its ongoing growth, ensuring its lasting impact, and solidifying its future as a powerhouse of the photographic arts in the Pacific Northwest is my top priority. I’d love to connect with each of you, so please feel free to reach out with ideas or just to chat over coffee. Let’s continue building this incredible community together.” -Mia McNeal Make sure to say hello to Mia when you’re at the Center next! With Mia, we will elevate our capital campaign over the next two years as we continue to raise funds for our new home and programs. #photocenternw #photoschool #photographycommunity #meettheteam #communityengagement #photographyeducation #seattlephotographers #pcnw
