🌟 YAC INTERVIEW DAY 🌟 Our Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) spent the day interviewing the grant applicants for our fall youth grant cycle. The students reviewed 23 proposals from local nonprofits, each seeking funding for projects that support youth and families in Emmet County. Combined, the funding requests totaled more than $175,000. Reviewing the grants can be a big, exhausting task, but our dedicated YAC did a phenomenal job of asking thoughtful questions while considering community needs. Funding decisions will be announced in late November. Interview Day is one of our favorite days at the Community Foundation. We are so lucky to have front-row seats to the inspiring compassion of this next generation of community leaders. Watching these young decision-makers offer fresh perspectives and a deep commitment to community is a powerful reminder of the impact we can make together. Special thanks to Jake and Sarah for facilitating a great day! 🙌 ABOUT YAC 🙌 The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) involves youth as decision makers and leaders in the community; promotes positive youth development; and involves youth in philanthropy and volunteerism. YAC participants act as advisors to the Fund for Youth and twice per year review grant applications and recommend grant awards to benefit young people and families in Emmet County. Our YAC is made up of students in grades 8-12 from across Emmet County. #YAC #YouthAdvisoryCommittee #YouthInPhilanthropy #Philanthropy #CharitableGiving #EmmetCounty #Alanson #Petoskey #HarborSprings #NorthernMichigan #Community #CommunityFoundation #NonProfit #CommunityLeaders #YoungLeaders

Wow—Thank you, Housing North! Last Thursday, October 24th, the Community Foundation received the Champion Housing Advocate Award at Housing North’s tenth annual Northwest Michigan Housing Summit. The summit brings housing advocates together each year to explore housing solutions for our region. We received this honor in recognition of our work on the Lofts at Lumber Square—work that has involved acquiring land, assembling project partners, and raising philanthropic funds to make Petoskey’s Lofts at Lumber Square a reality. Construction on the Lofts is well underway, and once complete, it will provide 60 new, safe, and affordable apartments for Emmet County’s middle-income households. David “DJ” Jones and Sarah Ford accepted the award on behalf of the Community Foundation. Jones applauded Ford’s tireless efforts to address our area’s housing challenges, as well as the work of key project collaborators Haan Development andNorthern Homes Community Development Corporation. The Community Foundation is nearing the final stages of its fundraising efforts, with just under $1 million remaining to raise. And that's not the only award for Petoskey! Our very own Carlin Smith was also recognized at the ceremony, receiving the Housing Dedication Award. Smith is a founding member of the Housing North board of directors (2018) and served as the organization’s board president in 2022 and 2023; he will step down when his term expires at the end of the year. Thank you, Petoskey, for stepping up to address our community’s housing needs. #AwardCeremony #AwardAnnouncement #WeWon #HousingAdvocacy #HousingAdvocates #HousingCrisis #SolvingProblems #CommunityFoundation #PHSACF #Petoskey #HarborSprings #HousingNorth #HousingSolutions #NewApartments #NorthernHomes #HaanDevelopment #StrongerTogether #Philanthropy #PetoskeyHarborSpringsAreaCommunityFoundation

The Community Foundation recently partnered with the Petoskey Chamber of Commerce and the Chapman Foundation for Caring Communities to bring "Our Community Listens," a three-day communication skills training workshop, to Petoskey. Three members of our own team joined participants from across the Petoskey-Harbor Springs area (and beyond) to take the workshop, so we can say firsthand that this experience was well worth it! Thoughtfully delivered, the workshop's well-balanced curriculum offers new information, practical skill building, and enough self-reflection to help anyone grow in their communication, empathy, and conflict resolution skills. Thanks, Mike & Amy! It was a great three days. #ChapmanFoundation #OurCommunityListens #CommunityLeaders #Communication #LearnToListen #BuildEmpathy #Petoskey #HarborSprings #LearnToLead #Empathy #Listen #PetoskeyChamber Chapman Foundation for Caring Communities Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce

Welcome back, YAC! Our Youth Advisory Committee, aka YAC, empowers youth as decision makers and leaders in our community. YAC participants meet monthly to learn about community philanthropy. They act as advisors to our Fund for Youth, and review grant applications and recommend grant awards to benefit young people and families in Emmet County. Since our YAC was established in 1994, over $2 million has been granted back to our local community for programming that makes youth and families in Emmet County stronger. Each YAC year begins with orientation! For this year's orientation, the cohort met at Camp Daggett's Adventure Center for an afternoon of team-building games and exercises. They worked together to develop communication and problem solving skills, and demonstrated Camp Daggett's "Full Value Agreement," fostering a supportive and respectful environment for individuals to practice challenge by choice. P.S. Did you know we are celebrating the YAC's 30th anniversary? Follow us for more YAC news past, present, and future. The Community Foundation is proud to build partnerships throughout Emmet County to meet the needs of our residents. We recently supported the Bay Bluffs Medical Care Facility with our Little Traverse Bay Hospice Fund. This field of interest fund was created for the purpose of supporting hospice care in Emmet County. This summer, Bay Bluffs received a grant of $32,935.96 to provide new furnishings and fixtures needed for transitioning existing two-bed units into single-patient end-of-life suites. These suites offer safe, comfortable spaces for patients and the people they care about to be together and have access to the care they need. On Wednesday, September 4th, Bay Bluffs welcomed the community to their ribbon cutting ceremony and offered guided tours of three new hospice suites. This project required collaboration between many parties: Bay Bluff Emmet County Medical Facility, the Friends of Hospice of Little Traverse Bay, Emmet County, JL Miller Interior Design, community hospice providers, and the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation.
