PAI continues to track consolidation, as seen in the steady growth in physician practice acquisitions by corporate entities, including private equity firms and insurer-owned corporations. Protecting physicians’ clinical autonomy for the benefit of their patients has never been more important.
Corporate entities now own more physician practices than hospitals or health systems, according to data from Avalere commissioned by PAI. More than 44,000 physician practices were acquired between 2019 and 2024; 36,000 of them were acquired by corporate entities. As corporate entities assume control of physician practices with little to no scrutiny from lawmakers, insights like these are critical to determining future policies that will help physicians maintain autonomy, the patient-physician relationship and patient care.
