UF Geomatics students Avery Nomikos and Jeff Parkinson created a detailed 3D model of the 1914 Plant City High School building, now a community center managed by the East Hillsborough Historical Society. The project aimed to preserve the historic structure digitally and provide precise measurements. Nomikos focused on creating a photogrammetric 3D model, while Parkinson used a laser scanner to create a precise lidar model. Jack Browsky assisted with field measurements. Local surveying firms contributed additional data: Crow and Associates Inc. provided aerial drone imagery, and Pickett and Associates LLC captured airborne lidar data. The project combined cutting-edge technology with historic preservation, resulting in valuable 3D models for historical preservation, virtual tourism, and education. Professor Ali Gonzalez-Perez expressed interest in continuing to capture geomatic data of other historic buildings in the Plant City area. This collaborative effort between students, local organizations, and surveying firms has created a lasting digital record of the iconic 1914 Plant City High School building, ensuring its architectural legacy is preserved for future generations.
