We're Picnic Animation Studio. We build worlds, characters and stories for commercial campaigns, films and social media.

About us

"A diverse group of humans with a shared passion for creating meaningful and imaginative animation" Picnic Studio was founded by Mina Song and Liam O'Connor. Writer/producer/directors with a passion for fantastical heartfelt stories in a dreamy mix of Asian and European influences. 2D is our first love but we have explored storytelling in VR, live visuals, title sequences and graphic novels. As well as a wealth of commercial work, charity and pro-social projects for AMNESTY, CALM and SPANA among others are a vital part our reel. Our BBC films on Children's mental health won a National Television award and our musical launch film for Hopster picked up a Kidscreen award for best short film. Recent work includes projects for DAFT PUNK, FUNCLES, CHEVROLET and WeTransfer in partnership with PARTIZAN, LEGO, KIKKOMAN, SAMSUNG and The End of the Fucking World with 4Creative.

Hayao Miyazaki has mentioned using the concept of “Ma” - the space or interval between things, not just physically but also in terms of time and meaning. There’s an English version of “Ma” too but it doesn’t have a name. It’s families staring out at a grey seaside with the waft of vinegar blowing off their hot chips. It’s holding back nausea in the back of a warm car. It’s long, long silences punctuated by your dad reading out loud the names of the shops that you pass. You could call it ‘Meh’. #meanderthals We are still looking for collaborators in writing and character development for our upcoming animated series, Meanderthals. Send us email at indev@picnicstudio.tv.

Here’s a look at another one of our originals - WEFOLK - a fantasy about the hidden folklore that surrounds us, boredom, navigating the stress of moving, divorce, introversion, and emotional growth. Clara - adjusting to a new life, begins to encounter peculiar creatures after her soul is split in half by an enigmatic horse. It is the summer holiday after all. She learns to face her fears, solve problems, and embrace the changes around her. We’re developing the project and currently looking for concept artists and writers to join us. Drop us a line at indev@picnicstudio.tv, and keep an eye out for updates and behind-the-scenes content!

Here’s a first look at one of our originals - MEANDERTHALS - an adult comedy series about avoiding things. Obstructions, emotions, family, responsibility, existential threats… There are all kinds of personal things in this - mixed-race families, northern-ness, boredom, the lengths people will go to not to say something. We are developing the pilot now and looking for writers to collaborate with. Share and hit us up at indev@picnicstudio.tv if you want to be involved. We’ll update with lots of production materials regularly. #picnicstudio #animation

It’s been a crazy couple of years, with many ups and downs in the industry. Like everyone else, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking deeply about what we want to create as animators and storytellers. What gets us up in the morning, whether heading to the studio or working from home? What could we blissfully dedicate endless time and energy to? Now we have somewhere to do it, it’s time to uncover the mad dreams. We’re excited to share that we’re working on new original projects that reflect what we’re most passionate about: fantasy, science fiction, mythology, comedy, and the sincerity we aim to bring into the world. We‘re planning to spotlight them regularly from now on. If you want to collaborate with us - illustrators, animators, writers -We‘re always looking to make new friends and grow our team.
