Piikani Lodge promotes the health and well-being of Blackfeet (Amskapi Piikani) people and lands.

About us

For more than 12,000 years, four member Tribal Nations, the Northern Piikani or Aapatohsi Piikani, the Siksika (Siksikawa), the Kainai (All Chiefs or Blood), the Amskapi Pikuni or Southern Pikuni and their animal relatives governed the glacial mountainous lands that are now known as The Crown of the Continent ecosystem of Northern Montana. This region is regarded as one of the remaining intact landscapes of the U.S. with: mountain glacier fed watersheds that millions downstream ultimately depend on for municipal and irrigation water, unprecedented plant and animal biodiversity, and immense capacity to buffer inhabitants against the ravages of climate change. The Blackfeet people have stewarded resources in this 10+ million-acre ecosystem in sustainable ways and are the original ‘scientists’ who observed, year after year, decade after decade, century after century, changes on the land; the Blackfeet have demonstrated utmost familiarity with landforms, directionality, weather patterns, natural cycles, and any variability occurring within those systems. Now that climate change has begun to touch ground, the Blackfeet people are reasserting their rightful role as stewards of these vital lands and as a result are reclaiming health and prosperity while healing the land. As an organization founded and led by Native people, Piikani Lodge works holistically and across both human and ecological domains to promote Indigenous health and well-being. PLHI programming is designed to restore distressed Native lands and communities through regenerative practices and principles.

Updates

  • Gosh, we have been meaning to tell everyone the good news that the REI Cooperative Action Fund has recognized the excellence of Piikani Lodge’s On the Land programs and staff through a multi-year award! The REI Cooperative Action Fund is a community-supported public charity created by the REI Co-op directly supporting organizations creating a more equitable outdoors in the U.S. We were notified of the nomination last winter and received news this spring that Piikani Lodge will receive operational support, access to organizational capacity building resources, and co-sponsorship of events with REI’s retail stores. This is exciting news as currently the On the Land Programs are hosting youth from around the state and even the world in guided culture camps that convey the value of cultural identity in creating a healthy lifestyle and accessing and conserving ancestral homelands. Piikani Lodge’s On the Land programs are guided by elders and traditional knowledge carriers who convey impactful teachings to young people so they may live healthy, happy lives and enjoy their rightful place within Blackfeet homelands. On the Land programs include the Four Directions Traditional Healing Camps, Ski Piikani, Ssto Ipapoki Tsiiman Winter Family Wellness Project, and will soon include a “People of the Horse” Equine Healing Program. Huge thanks to our friends at REI for this incredible gift! #blackfeetnation #health #healthandwellness #traditionalhealing #REI

  • Oki! When our team at Piikani Lodge heard about Lily Gladstone's incredible victory as Golden Globes’ First Indigenous Nominee For Female Actor In A Motion Picture, we shouted with joy and amazement. We were amazed but not surprised. The Blackfeet Nation and its people are uniquely powerful and full of talent. So many incredible leaders call the Blackfeet Nation home. We have also received quite a few questions about Blackfeet culture, lands, and language, so we prepared a few helpful factsheets. Enjoy and share! #LilyGladstone #BlackfeetNation #amskapipiikani #piikanilodge
