"Ultimately, it's your legacy to say, 'This bridge we're driving over, I had a part in it,'" said Gregory Canivan, P.E., during his conversation for the latest Interview column in #PileDriverMagazine.
Exactly 30 years into his #geotechnical #engineering career, Greg, technical principal and senior project manager at S&ME, keeps his calendar full – he's a director on the PDCA Board, a past president and current at-large board member for the #PDCASouthCarolina Chapter, a co-chair on the Deep Foundations Institute's Driven Pile Committee, among other industry roles and responsibilities.
"At the end of the day, I'd like to feel that we got something accomplished – maybe personally, professionally or industry-wide," he said. "I want to try to make the construction industry a little better than when I started in it."
And with a challenging career that involves handling competing priorities and responsibilities on an ongoing basis, Greg says that his involvement in associations helps to keep him sane.
"There are few people you can share unique professional challenges with, and at industry events, you find those people who can empathize and relate," he said. "Being with your 'own kind,' so to speak, in these committees, it's like therapy... You can say that my [association] involvement is cheaper than therapy."
