While we're lucky enough to have mild winters, it's always a good idea to keep some pet safety tips in your back pocket. Whether you're hitting up some snowy trails or navigating icy neighborhoods, these pet winter safety tips can help keep your furry friends safe this season 🥶 1: Keep your emergency pet kit well-stocked and ready—in a winter storm, you may not be able to leave your home for several days. We recommend having at least three days worth of food and water for each pet in your household. 2: Walk dogs on leash! More dogs get lost during the winter than any other season. If you’re outside during winter storm conditions, keep dogs safe by keeping them on leash 3: Salt and de-icer can irritate pets’ paw pads and be toxic if ingested. After each walk, wash and dry your pet’s feet and stomach to remove ice, salt, and chemicals—and check for cracks in paw pads or redness between the toes. 4: Cold tolerance depends on your dog’s age, breed, size, and health. For small dogs and short-haired dogs, temperatures below 45 degrees could cause discomfort. In general, extreme caution should be exercised in temperatures below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. 5: Know the signs of hypothermia. Hypothermia occurs when your pet’s body temperature is dangerously low. Depending on severity, it can be a medical emergency. Symptoms include shivering/trembling, sluggishness, muscle stiffness, whining or anxiety, cold ears & body. We hope you and your furry friends have an incredible winter! #veterinaryclinic #petsafetytips #winterpetsafety
