About us
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s mission is to protect people and the environment by advancing the safe transportation of energy and other hazardous materials that are essential to our daily lives. About us: • From ensuring that freight trains and trucks properly display hazmat placards to inspecting underground energy and hazardous liquid and gas pipelines, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is working to protect people and the environment by advancing the safe transportation of energy and other hazardous materials that are essential to our daily lives. To do this, the agency establishes national policy, sets and enforces standards, educates, and conducts research to prevent incidents. We also prepare the public and first responders to reduce consequences if an incident does occur. • At PHMSA, we're seeking talented and diverse professionals who want meaningful and challenging careers. We invest in training, technology, and mentoring for our employees and are committed to fostering a dynamic professional environment. • PHMSA develops and enforces regulations for the safe, reliable, and environmentally sound operation of the nation's 3.3 million mile pipeline system and more than 1.2 million daily shipments of hazardous materials by land, sea, and air. • PHMSA is one of ten U.S. Department of Transportation modal operating administrations and is comprised of the Office of Pipeline Safety and the Office of Hazardous Materials Safety, with five regional field offices across the nation.

Last week, PHMSA issued an advisory bulletin encouraging all pipeline operators to adopt Pipeline Safety Management Systems (PSMS). Congress, NTSB, PHMSA, and other stakeholders have long recognized voluntary adoption of PSMS as the best way to encourage the development of strong, proactive safety cultures that actively seek to identify and mitigate risks to pipeline integrity.

Most hazardous liquid and gas pipelines are located underground in a pipeline right-of-way (ROW). A ROW is a strip of land that pipeline operators secure to construct and perform pipeline maintenance and inspections. #PHMSAFactFriday

#DidYouKnow Early oil pipelines were made from wood 🪵and relied on gravity for movement. It was not until 1863 when a two-inch cast iron pipe was created to move oil from a Pennsylvania oil field to a refinery more than two miles away. #PHMSAFactFriday

Fluorescent lights contain mercury, making them a hazardous material. Instead of throwing them in the trash, fluorescent lights should always be disposed of properly at a local recycling center. #PHMSAFactFriday
