Job-related cognitive ability is still a good predictor of future job performance, especially for complex, demanding, or ambiguous work. New study: 101 train drivers completed three cognitive ability measures. High scorers in selective attention, fluid intelligence, and verbal reasoning were safer drivers in a simulated train driving exercise. Technical note: All three measures asked questions in the context of the job (e.g., stop signal test, rail-related verbal reasoning questions) or focused on a job-related cognitive ability facet (e.g., fluid intelligence). There's been a lot of hand-wringing about cognitive ability testing post-Sackett et al. (2022). However, they concluded, and the principle remains, that job-relatedness still gets the best results in selection assessments.
