#Reciprocity. Not the easiest word to say or spell, but one of the key concepts that has guided indigenous cultures for tens of thousands of years. "If I care for my place and the people around me, they will care for me." Reciprocity is something for us to relearn and practice. Giving back and helping your community is a great way to benefit yourself and your family. The graphic below outlines some personal benefits you can get by being involved. At the individual level, Dr. Tyler Van der Weele, a distinguished figure in epidemiology and the study of human #flourishing, has found that our personal well-being is partly defined by our participation in the common good, meaning that the wellbeing of our community is an integral part of our own flourishing. "At an individual level, practices like gratitude, physical exercise, and moral character are important for happiness and health. However, for broader flourishing, which includes aspects like meaning, purpose, character development, and relationships, we need more than just positive physiological and psychology exercises. We need embeddedness in communities, institutions, and long-term relational commitments." You don't have to solve the world's problems. What is one thing you care enough about to act on? Start small, connect with others and have a go. You might help your community and also help yourself.
