  • Having this business-like, collaborative focus paid dividends for Plumbing Manufacturers International when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency started developing the #WaterSense program, which launched in 2006. Pete DeMarco, then of American Standard (now a LIXIL brand) and now semi-retired from IAPMO, led PMI's involvement in the program's development. Because WaterSense voluntary product specifications were set 20% below federal water-efficiency standards, the program helped to deter states from setting standards below federal or WaterSense levels for many years. Harmonized water-efficiency standards makes manufacturing more efficient and less costly. Executive Leader I Sustainability I Innovation I Infrastructure

It was an honor to join President Biden in Milwaukee to celebrate the announcement of the Environmental Protection Agency's final Lead and Copper Rule Improvements. It was a historic day in the decades-long effort to #GetTheLeadOut and provide safe drinking water for every American—especially low-income and people of color neighborhoods who disproportionately suffer from lead contamination. On a personal note, contributing to the development of the LCRI was one of the most profound experiences that I had during my 3 years as the Assistant Administrator for Water. One of the first decisions I made – back in February 2021 – was that the Trump Lead Rule was woefully insufficient to protect the American people from lead in drinking water. Since that decision 2.5 years ago, the EPA team worked tireless in developing an exceptional rule that is grounded in the latest science and EPA authority under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The rule is informed by the wisdom and lived experience of thousands, of community leaders, local water agency officials, state environmental secretaries, the private sector, and more. The science has been settled for decades—there is NO safe level of lead exposure, especially for children. Now, at long last, we have a national regulation that reflects this reality. The LCRI will require drinking water systems nationwide to replace lead service lines within 10 years—making critical infrastructure upgrades while creating ~hundreds of thousands~ of jobs. The President also announced an additional $2.6 billion for drinking water upgrades and lead pipe replacements, funded by the landmark #BipartisanInfrastructureLaw. And what's more, 49% of the funding must be provided to disadvantaged communities as grant funding or principal forgiveness that does not have to be repaid. The Biden-Harris Administration has delivered for the American people with this rule—now it’s time for ALL of us to come together on the important work of implementation. Together, local water utilities, government officials, community organizations, the private sector, and philanthropy can solve this generational public health challenge. We Can. We Will. Get The Lead Out. Let’s go! 💪

  • The #plumbing #manufacturing industry has traditionally classified products and projects as residential or commercial. Starting now and into the future, the industry can benefit from looking at projects through a social lens. “We’re looking at solving bigger issues, collectively,” Troy Benavidez, LIXIL’s government affairs leader and co-chair of the Plumbing Manufacturers International Advocacy and Government Affairs Committee explained. Benavidez explained that looking at projects through a social lens can help companies better design and implement solutions that are user-centric and can work within a particular place and culture. If you’ve already registered for PMI24, contact Jodi Stuhrberg to add the program to your registration. Dr. Scott Hutcheson, the Purdue University faculty member who will facilitate the program, will lead participants through an examination of prospection: the envisioning of a future outcome that makes you excited and emotional and that can be shared with partners. “When you do that, you get what’s called ‘shared intentionality,’ where you all say, ‘come hell or high water, this is where we’re going together,’” he stated. Having both prospection and shared intentionality in place makes achieving a goal more likely. These two principles underlie one of the rules of “Strategic Doing – 10 Skills for Agile Leadership,” the PMI Inspiring Leaders Program’s theme and also the name of a book Dr. Hutcheson co-authored. He has worked with more than 4,000 leaders from 147 countries. He speaks at conferences and other events worldwide, and his TED Talk on the science of prospection has been viewed on YouTube more than 1.3 million times. Secure your spot at PMI24 today! • Plumbing Manufacturers International Introduces Rethink Water Chapter on Building Plumbing Systems In a new chapter of its Rethink Water initiative, Plumbing Manufacturers International (PMI) is addressing the importance of “Responsibly Managing Building Plumbing Systems.” New website content including a video explains how these systems consist of many parts, including pipes, valves, water heaters, fixtures and fittings, pumps and drains. In well-engineered systems, these components work together to achieve the safe and efficient flow of water. PMI CEO and Executive Director Kerry Stackpole IOM FASAE CAE said the content was developed to help policymakers understand how a change to one part of the system affects the other parts. “With good intentions toward saving water, policymakers in California and elsewhere want to reduce flow and flush rates below performance-tested WaterSense specifications certified by the Environmental Protection Agency,” he explained. However, further reducing these rates may have unintended, negative consequences to other plumbing system components, making them not work as well as planned. For example, using less water per toilet flush may lead to double flushes using even more water, inadequate drain carry of solid waste, blockages in sewer pipes, and backflow into potable drinking water. Lower-flow showerheads may lead to longer showers due to the difficulty of rinsing soap from hair. Lower water flow causes water to move through pipes at a slower rate and stay inside pipes longer, potentially leading to water pathogen growth. “And perhaps most importantly, buyers may choose not to purchase lower-flow fixtures and fittings, choosing instead to leave then on store shelves,” Stackpole said. “Any change to specifications must take the behavior and preferences of customers into account.” Watch the video and read the content: https://lnkd.in/deTfmj9n #plumbing #manufacturing #RethinkWater
