When someone brings up suicidal thoughts, it's tempting to see these thought patterns as "bad things" that need defeating or fixing. Although distressing, thoughts of suicide can often be understandable human reactions to pain. Rather than trying to "go to war" with these thoughts, we can approach the discussion with curiosity and openness. Using approaches like Internal Family Systems (IFS), we've seen powerful shifts when people explore their thoughts without judgment. Several months ago, one IOP client shared about her suicidal thoughts in group. Instead of immediately trying to push these difficult thoughts and feelings away, we asked questions like: "What is this part of you trying to say? What is it protecting you from?" Through the process of curious exploration, she began to open up. We could see her demeanor shift from guarded, scattered, and fragmented… to open, composed, and curious. After that group session, she never mentioned suicide again. This approach isn't about ignoring suicide or self-harm risk. It's about recognizing that these thoughts often carry important messages about a person's needs and experiences. One of our primary goals in IOP is to introduce clients to the broad scope of human experience. We aim to show that the things they learned to be ashamed of are often not only normal, but expected. When people feel truly heard, they can become more open to understanding themselves. They can take the first steps on the path toward healing. #NationalSuicidePreventionWeek #suicide #mentalhealth #therapy #ifs

This Saturday (Sept 7), we're hosting a new life skills workshop for high-school and college-aged students at our Creve Coeur office. Therapist Cassie Wichlenski is launching a group program called “Building Life Resilience.” And it's designed to empower students with essential life skills not taught in school, including... - Coping Strategies: Personalized plans for effective coping. - Stress & Anxiety: Techniques to stay calm and focused. - Self-Awareness: Understand and manage emotions. - Brain & Body: Learn stress effects on mind and body. - Problem-Solving: Tools to tackle challenges head-on. We can’t think of anyone better than Cassie for this important work. She’s been working with some of our clients recently. And they (along with all our staff) absolutely love her. We’re proud to support her new venture. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gFivaifG. And if you know any students who may be interested, please pass on the PDF flyer attached below. PS: There will be more sessions later this fall as well (including a session for middle-schoolers on Oct 5th). #mentalhealth #highschool #college #resilience #lifeskills #stress #anxiety

If you're struggling with symptoms of anxiety, doing a quick self-evaluation can help you decide what steps to take next. The GAD-7 Assessment below offers an objective measure of your condition. And it gives you results you can share with a mental health professional. The assessment asks you answer just a few simple multiple-choice questions. The higher your score, the more significant your anxiety (and the greater potential need for treatment). Click the link below to access our free quiz. It's 100% anonymous and confidential. https://lnkd.in/gi7tdhMS #anxiety #gad #quiz #therapy

Below are 10 treatment principles we live by at Plural Healthcare. Our clinical team created these to set clear intentions for the care we provide... and to help clients better understand our IOP treatment approach. #therapy #mentalhealth #treatment #philosophy #values #principles --- 1. Kindness: People often come to treatment wounded by a history of negative interactions from important people. We will be the people they can rely on, by being accepting, gracious, receptive, dependable, kind, and fun. This will be an environment in their lives that feels safe. 2. Accountability: We must set a tone for boundaries, structure, and hard work. We are not being kind, nor helping them, when we put more effort into their treatment than they are ready to put forth. We can’t force someone into readiness when something is holding them back. 3. Before, During, and After: We learn about their before, hold a lantern during our walk with them, and stay within reach as they navigate their after. We aren’t a business office, we are an ally. 4. Fun and Humor: People won’t stay if it’s boring and bland. We want them to look forward to their time in group and leave feeling like they were a part of something not only meaningful, but enjoyable. 5. The Client Is the Expert: We don’t know their lives. The best we can do is offer ideas and concepts, listen, make guesses, and walk with them as they make changes they understand for themselves, as they are ready to make them. 6. Mind Their Pace: Recognize that clients come in at varying levels of readiness concerning anxiety, trust, vulnerability, assertiveness, and guardedness. Listen to find where they are, and adjust your approach to their pace. 7. Initiative: An internal drive to improve our services. Complacency is the enemy of growth and innovation. To quote Theodore Roosevelt: “Get action. Do things; don’t fritter away your time; create, act, take a place wherever you are and be somebody.” 8. Treat the Whole Person: Clients have origin stories, relationship networks, health concerns, work lives, legal complications, and community needs beyond what we can provide. We must listen for all needs, and provide appropriate guidance where able. 9. One Foot in Comfort, One Foot in Challenge: Always have an eye on encouraging clients to be comfortable enough to maintain safety and self-care, but uncomfortable enough to grow. This goes for us as well. 10. Accessibility: Never use unnecessary clinical jargon with clients. It alienates connection and makes the process cold and sterile. We promote inclusion and engage interest in education. Rather than above, we are among them. We are in this life together. --- What about you? Leave a comment below and let us know… Which of these principles resonates most with you? When have you applied them to your own work or life? What other values guide how you treat other people? .

IOP is one of those “hidden gems” in mental health that many people could benefit from at some point in their life. Unfortunately, many people aren’t aware what this treatment option is or how it can help them. We've created a short, 5-minute video to walk through everything you need to know about IOP. Watch it now to discover: - What is IOP group therapy exactly? And how can they help with depression, anxiety, trauma, and other disruptive mental health challenges? - The 4-part process we use to help clients find relief and turn things around quickly. - Why we connect every single client with an individual therapist. And why a big goal of ours is to get clients *out* of our program. - Transformative insights that previous clients have discovered at IOP (in their own words). - And more. Watch our video below. #mentalhealth #iop #therapy #grouptherapy #anxiety #depression #trauma PS: Would you help us spread the word about this little-known treatment option? We'd love it if you shared this video with others (either by repost this on LinkedIn or directing people to https://lnkd.in/gUiSHXFr.)

The #988 Lifeline launched two years ago – providing an accessible, easy to remember phone number for suicide prevention and mental health support. Yet many people still aren’t aware of this life-saving resource. #988lifeline #hotline #suicideprevention #mentalhealth #depression If you’re dealing with a mental health crisis, contemplating suicide, or need someone to talk to right away… dialing the 988 hotline may just save your life. The lifeline provides free 24/7 support for a range of mental health challenges (such as panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, depression, anxiety, addiction, and more). Yet even though many call this “the 911 for mental health”… this service is actually much more than that. So what is this hotline exactly? What happens when you call? When should you use it? How does it compare to 911? And what other alternatives are there? We've created a free, in-depth guide to answer these questions and more. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/e-wSk5MM
