About us

+ POOL is working to provide free and safe access to the rivers around NYC for swimming. The organization was born out of + POOL, an idea for a water-filtering, floating swimming pool with four pool arms (kids pool, lap pool, lounge pool and sports pool) forming a plus-shape. The pool was designed to filter 1 million gallons of river water a day through the walls of the pool and protect swimmers from currents to provide safe access to urban waters cut off from the public. Since its founding, the organization has led a grassroots advocacy effort to push for safe and increased access to the waters around NYC for swimming, promote healthful recreation and advance environmental justice, while also supporting equitable access to swim education, a lack of which disproportionately impacts minority and low-income communities.

Ever wonder what’s at the bottom of the East River in New York City? Roux was able to take a look as part of our underwater drone sanitary survey in collaboration with Friends of + POOL. In preparing for the design of a floating bathing pool, we conducted an underwater survey of the river bottom using Roux's FiFish underwater drone. We’re incredibly proud of + POOL co-founder, Oana Stănescu, who just opened "cover me softly" as the curator for the 2024 Beta - Timișoara Architecture Biennial in Romania! Oana's curation of the Biennial brings together a range of artists, performers, directors, musicians, architects and many that defy categorization, in a packed schedule of movies, DJ sets, exhibitions, performances, talks and workshops at the Garrison in Piata Libertatii. It launched this past Friday, September 13 and will continue for 6 weeks. If you find yourselves in Timisoara, we hope you'll visit and send us your highlights! Oana is an architect, designer, and educator who continues to push boundaries in contemporary architecture and design. From co-founding + POOL to creating iconic spaces for Off-White, MoMA, and Coachella, her influence is undeniable. Now, she’s bringing that same innovative spirit to Timișoara, curating a biennial set to spark vital socio-cultural conversations. Quoted from her interview in KoozArch magazine, Oana states: "We wanted to see if we can return to basics — from an architectural perspective as well as a social one — to remember what it is that is worth fighting for and why despair is not an option. Music moves us and it doesn’t require words or explanations. It also brings people together physically, in space. Covers became the way in, a means to look at architecture from a different perspective; one revelling in interconnectedness — in conversation but also one closer to its primary purpose, meaning to cover, to protect. Simply put, it’s the excuse to dance our way together through some of the questions that we are confronted with today."

Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) are a significant environmental challenge, especially in urban areas like New York City. During heavy rainfall, these systems can become overwhelmed, leading to the discharge of untreated sewage into our rivers. This contaminates water, impacting both human health and the environment. At + POOL, we are addressing this critical issue by advocating for solutions that reduce CSO events, monitoring water quality to show the public when our rivers are safe levels for swimming, and ultimately, building our water-filtering floating pool - a design solution to this environmental problem. Together, we can make our rivers safer and cleaner. Photo credit: (1) Curbed, (2) Natural Resources Defense Council

Water quality plays a vital role in maintaining the health of our environment and community. Whether it’s for drinking, swimming, or supporting local wildlife, clean water is a necessity. At + POOL, we believe that everyone should have access to safe, swimmable water, and we’re working tirelessly to make this a reality. Understanding water quality is key to protecting our most precious resource. Thank you so much to our hardworking team members from the Interstate Environmental Commission for their work on our filtration barge at Pier 35! #waterquality #waterstewardship #pluspool

Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams today announced a step forward in demonstrating the feasibility of a filtered floating pool in New York City waters, which will be located at Pier 35 near Manhattan’s Lower East Side. New York State is partnering with New York City to jointly fund a three-month water filtration demonstration project at Pier 35 starting this August as well as a pilot of a 2,000 sq. ft. portion of the pool for final testing in 2025 to help ensure this innovative model can safely provide swimming access for New Yorkers. “Through innovative solutions like + POOL, we are providing children and their families with safe spaces to swim in New York City,” Governor Hochul said. “NY SWIMS is the largest statewide investment in swimming since the New Deal, and we’re increasing access to pools while helping our kids learn how to stay safe in the water.” Read the full Press Release here: https://lnkd.in/ejBqgBrN
