With May coming to a close, so does #AsthmaAwarenessMonth. Our team believes it is important to continue highlighting industrial air pollution's impact on asthma and how manufacturers play a role in health equity. Communities near industrial facilities are most exposed to industrial and transportation exhaust, putting them at higher risk for developing asthma or other respiratory conditions, especially during poor air quality days. Although regulatory efforts continue to reduce PM2.5 from industrial processes, increasing temperature, precipitation, and humidity means that poor air quality days are becoming more frequent due to the subsequent changes these meteorological effects have in PM2.5 and ozone concentrations (US EPA, 2021, p. 20). Manufacturers have a unique opportunity to combat these rising exposures by proactively investing in high-quality industrial air solutions that incorporate redundancy, modern controls, and other features that help maintain high reliability and onstream time with minimal operator interface. Is your facility ready to upgrade to new air abatement equipment? Pollution Systems is proud to be a part of the fight for clean air by providing manufacturers with tailored air control solutions that reduce PM2.5 and other hazardous emissions into the atmosphere. As an active member of the Ethylene Oxide Sterilization Association (EOSA), PSI is dedicated to understanding the new ethylene oxide (EtO) regulations and how they will impact commercial sterilization facilities. The new rules address EtO emissions from several sources, including sterilization chambers, aeration rooms, and other areas within sterilization facilities. Additionally, the EPA is modifying regulations surrounding the emissions that occur during periodic equipment start-up and shutdown, as well as process upsets or malfunctions. Finally, many sterilizers will be required to install ethylene oxide continuous monitoring systems (CEMS).  Pollution Systems recognizes the crucial role of ethylene oxide sterilization for medical equipment and supplies and will continue to support commercial sterilizers during this unprecedented time. As the operational impacts of these new tighter regulations are defined, we will assist companies in the industry by providing air pollution control solutions to help them meet compliance with minimal disruptions in operations. Please do not hesitate to contact us if your sterilization facility requires new air pollution control equipment – our engineers will work with you to develop a system that meets the operational needs of your process. EPA finalized a rule today that will reduce ethylene oxide (EtO) emissions by more than 90% – 21 tons per year nationwide – bringing every facility below the level for elevated health risks under the Clean Air Act. Finalizing this rule is one of the most important measures we're taking to reduce emissions of EtO and help reduce the lifetime cancer risk for people living near commercial sterilization facilities. Let’s talk about snack food manufacturing…🍿🥨 Whether healthy or indulgent, raw ingredients are processed in food manufacturing facilities to create our go-to snack foods; food production processes can be tricky to operate as many ingredients leave residues and cause the exhaust stream to become wet, sticky, or greasy, which may lead to poor performance of treatment equipment and constant maintenance needs. Many snack food processes involve (or generate) heat when cooking foods, which can cause odors, VOCs, and particulate matter in the exhaust stream. For frying processes, the added oils often lead to grease-laden particulate buildup. If treated improperly, these pollutants can cause safety and employee exposure concerns. So, where does air pollution control come in? • Particulate matter is an air pollutant that causes environmental damage and health implications for all populations and is regulated by the government. To maintain operating permits, facilities must abate PM emissions from their process. Particulate Scrubbers are effective at capturing particulate matter from food production processes. • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are compounds that compromise air quality, lead to harmful health effects on humans and ecosystems, and cause damage to the earth’s ozone. Like PM, a facility’s VOC emissions are regulated by governmental agencies and require abatement. The air pollution control systems commonly used to destroy VOCs from food manufacturing include Catalytic Oxidizers and Thermal Oxidizers. • Odors, while difficult to measure, are components of your air stream that need addressing, as many neighboring properties and local entities consider them nuisances. Catalytic Oxidizers, Recuperative Thermal Oxidizers, and Chemical Scrubbers are all suitable technologies to treat industrial odors. Interested in learning more?
