We are proud to highlight the incredible work of Christopher Dunfield at Polycarbin. They are revolutionizing lab plastic waste management by creating a circular economy model that not only recycles single-use lab plastics but also turns them into high-quality lab consumables. Their Carbin Counter™ platform even allows research institutions to track their recycling efforts and quantify emissions savings in real time. 🌍♻️ Key Insights from Christopher Dunfield: ☣ Audit Your Waste: Research institutions should start by conducting red bag audits to identify recyclable items often overlooked, like pipette tips. These items can be diverted from incineration to recycling, significantly reducing costs and environmental impact. ⚠️ Overcome EHS Challenges: While some EHS teams may be cautious about new waste management practices, understanding and leveraging RCRA guidelines can help ease these concerns and open doors to more sustainable waste solutions. 🏭 Embrace Circular Economy Resins: Manufacturers can enhance their sustainability credentials by incorporating Polycarbin's recycled resins into their lab products. Christopher's leadership at Polycarbin is helping to pave the way for a more sustainable future in the scientific community. Let's join him in making impactful changes! 🔗 Learn more about Polycarbin at polycarbin.com #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #LabPlastics #Recycling #Polycarbin #ResearchRecycling

The scientific community creates an estimated 12 billion pounds of plastic waste each year, but thanks to two former Pitt Med students, Pitt research labs are at the forefront of a closed-loop recycling system for scientific plastics. James O'Brien and Noah Pyles started the company Polycarbin, which is now returning to Pitt to help offset its carbon footprint and meet its sustainability goals. https://lnkd.in/dTmeR2wk

We’re thrilled to highlight Noah Pyles, who is leading the charge at Polycarbin with his commitment to data-driven sustainability. Polycarbin was founded on an evidence-based approach, proving the technical feasibility of circular resins and quantifying their environmental impact. Their mission? To drive measurable change in lab plastic consumption. 🌍♻️ Key Insights from Noah Pyles: 📊 Data is King: Polycarbin’s strength lies in their ability to provide clear, actionable data. They’ve conducted third-party LCAs to verify their environmental impact, measuring carbon emissions, water savings, and raw material reductions. This rigorous approach ensures that their solutions are both effective and transparent. 💼 Funding & Incentives: There are numerous grants and tax incentives available for research institutions looking to reduce emissions and recycle plastics. Polycarbin’s evidence-based approach positions scientists and institutions to take full advantage of these opportunities. 🌱 Reducing Scope 3 Emissions: A significant portion of scope 3 emissions comes from purchased goods. By sourcing from Polycarbin, institutions can substantially reduce these emissions and contribute to a more sustainable future. Noah Pyles and the Polycarbin team are at the forefront of creating a more sustainable future for labs. Let’s work together to support and expand these vital efforts. 🔗 Learn more about Polycarbin at polycarbin.com Follow us on LinkedIn to stay up to date on the latest and greatest. Innovative Co-Founder @ Polycarbin | Science Made Sustainable

Downcycling solutions represent a viable strategy for managing hard-to-recycle plastic streams and will continue to be a small part of sustainable resource management for the life science industry. However, for high-value lab plastics uniquely suited for re-manufacturing, 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗘 #ClosedLoopRecycling represents the most sustainable and scalable solution. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation defines circularity as “circulating products and materials at their 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲...” In the case of single-use laboratory products like pipette tip boxes, that translates to recycling pipette tip boxes back into more pipette tip boxes. Not only does this maximize use-cycles and minimize carbon impact, but it also prevents disequilibrium of the resource between disparate supply chains. For example, if an estimated 𝟮𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗶𝗽𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗽 𝗯𝗼𝘅𝗲𝘀 are consumed every year in the greater Boston area, that equates to roughly 𝟰.𝟴 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗯𝘀 of plastic produced annually. How many park benches or trash receptacles can we produce with 4.8 million lbs of plastic? How many NEW park benches and trash receptacles are required within the same market every year? Are these supply chains capable of reaching equilibrium? While the downcycling solution in this example is obviously better than landfill or incineration, unfortunately, it cannot practically scale. Shunting the byproduct of a single-use industry into the feedstock of a re-use industry will inevitably result in resource disequilibrium. Conversely, if 20 million pipette tip boxes are consumed in one year in the greater Boston area, it doesn’t take a leap of faith to assume there will be a demand for a similar amount of pipette tip boxes in the following year. At the end of the day, 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗘 circularity is the most sustainable method for managing life science plastics because it maximizes 𝘂𝘀𝗲-𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀, minimizes 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁, and can reach 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗶𝘂𝗺 at scale. #EvidenceBasedSustainability #TrueCircularity Polycarbin

Have you ever participated in a pipette tip box recycling or take-back program and wished you could do more than just recycle the box or specific brand? Many labs that pilot or participate in our Alpha Carbin Program (for any brand of pipette tip box) come to us looking for ways to make a broader impact. We work with these labs to evaluate their workflows and see how they fit with our Beta Carbin Program. This collaboration allows Polycarbin to recycle approximately 85% of their non-hazardous, rigid lab plastics and transform them into the next generation of lab products. All while providing third-party verified data to help quantify Scope 3 emissions. Want to go beyond the box? Reach out to our team to see what else we can circularize from your lab! #TrueCircularity #EvidenceBasedScience #ResearchRecycleRepeat
