If you missed this week's Leaders Lounge, Managing Director Daniel Student shared his three best practices for successful board meetings (and offers a bonus fourth practice below): 1. Ask one, and only one, question for every pre-read. Provide multiple avenues to answer it: in writing in advance, during the meeting, and afterward by communicating further feedback to a board leader responsible for it. 2. Theme every board meeting on a mission pillar/strategic focus area. For example: commit to centering all conversation on, say, community partnerships for that meeting. 3. Leave room at every meeting for one strategic question to discuss that doesn't need an answer. What do we need to do to better partner with Tribes? What should our organization look like in ten years? These can help break your board out of familiar patterns and power struggles—and you may see more engagement from members who tend to be less vocal. 4. One more: Your board chair should have the written job responsibility of ensuring all voices are heard equally in meetings. They should be tasked with asking some who take a lot of space to make space for others, and encouraging those who don't naturally jump in to take space.
