Would you light thousands, if not millions of dollars on fire? We didn't think so. Chief Strategy Officer Ben Dutter shares how most brands are essentially doing just that with wasted ad spend.

Think of all the money that you've spent on advertising. Imagine it in a big pile of cash. Is it millions of dollars? Tens of millions? Now imagine a third of it lighting on fire. That's essentially what I see hundreds of brands do every year. We do ~700 marketing audits per year for prospective clients, as well as manage hundreds of clients' marketing campaigns. That's right, we estimate an average of a THIRD of media is either: • completely not incremental, i.e. doing nothing • incremental but unprofitable (way past diminishing returns) The most common culprits are of course the most common ad channels, Google and Meta. Some of that comes down to the WAY in which most brands and agencies buy those media, but, that's for another post. In the last year, the aggregate of our clients have: • Increased spend by 3% • Increased revenue by 11% This is a big rolled up number, but in some standout cases we've: • Cut ad spend by as much as 50% with no loss of revenue • Improved overall efficiency (MER) by 2x • Helped a declining business grow (with less spend) I talk a lot about measurement, incrementality, and ad waste. It's true. But I think it is one of the greatest unnecessary capital transfers in our lifetime. Why would you continue to funnel billions of dollars toward systems that aren't benefiting you? Imagine if you saved even 10% of your ad spend last year. For our average client, that's about a million bucks. A million bucks! Imagine what you could do with that: • Invest in better company infrastructure • Finally improve some product and do R&D • Give raises, bonuses, or promotions to your team • Improve your business intelligence data • Even a family vacation for cryin' out loud Almost anything is better than just wasting money on ineffective ads. I'm not trying to say "oh you're just doing it wrong." I don't blame you. I blame the massive industry designed to manipulate and confuse you. Just stop and think for a second. Are your costs going up? Is your revenue staying flat? Something ain't addin up here. #incrementality #measurement #attribution
