The Texas Nuclear Alliance is building momentum, recently announcing several new Alliance members including Texas A&M University System, Terrestrial Energy, enCore Vistra, Bridgeport Instruments, CPS Energy, and International Nuclear Solutions. Texas State Rep. Brooks Landgraf detailed how nuclear power is now seen as crucial in a recent interview with the Odessa American. “As we stand at the cusp of a transformative era in energy it’s clear that nuclear power holds immense promise for both Texas and our nation as a whole,” said Landgraf, an Odessa Republican who chairs the Texas House Committee on Environmental Regulation. ICYMI: Reed Clay, president of the Alliance, recently taped an episode of the Titans of Nuclear podcast to discuss the latest nuclear news.
TNA President Reed Clay joined Adam Smith of Last Energy for an episode of the Titans of Nuclear podcast to discuss the latest nuclear news in Texas, how the Texas Nuclear Alliance movement started, and why Texas is particularly well-suited to lead this resurgence in the nuclear industry and the development of advanced nuclear in particular. “To some extent we are paying for global warming and we’re having to make investments today that would have been prudent to make in the past — prudent and probably less expensive. And we might also have avoided a lot of misery.” Senator Nathan Johnson weighed in on why power outages continue to happen in Texas after severe weather events in this recent The Texas Tribune story, outlining the urgent need for resiliency planning and investment. According to the article, “Texas had 210 weather-related power outages — more than any other state — from 2000 to 2023.” https://lnkd.in/ghSwUYzn

According to a new study commissioned by the Texas Solar Energy Society on the value of residential solar in Texas, the overall value of distributed solar in ERCOT will be about 27¢/kWh. Average residential electricity rates in Texas are typically lower than 27¢/kWh, so this valuation suggests distributed solar provides value beyond just the electricity generated. The study breaks down the value even further, stating that 15¢/kWh is realized in the generation, transmission, and distribution system and 12¢/kWh is realized through air pollutant and emission reduction benefits. The benefits of rooftop solar, showing cost-savings to Texans within the ERCOT electric grid, are also explored. According to the study, customer-sited solar if valued correctly, can be an important tool to support energy reliability and affordability for Texans. https://lnkd.in/gftiBYgK #SolarEnergy #TexasGrid #SolarPower #RenewableEnergy

“It’s clear now: The weather has changed, but the power grid has not.” #ICYMI Dr. Joshua Rhodes, PhD, a member of our Energy Policy Advisory Council, co-authored this op-ed with Dr. Michael E. Webber about Hurricane Beryl’s impacts on the electric grid. “In the end, we have to decide resilience is worth the investment. Regulators and rate payers often balk when rates go up to invest in a better system. So, we usually don’t spend the money and we stick with a fragile system that can fail. However, it would be cheaper and more equitable to pay for a better system that stands up more robustly against powerful weather. It feels more expensive up front, but it saves money in the spared lives and in the outages and damages that are avoided. Saving money up front feels prudent, but it’s costly when the system fails to withstand the storm.” https://lnkd.in/gAF2-6eF

A recent article published by McKinsey & Company shows that some technologies are falling short of the global target, particularly green hydrogen (55% increase needed), nuclear, DAC and CCUS (40% increase needed). They suggest that in order to accelerate progress and achieve rapid scaling, a more aggressive cost reduction strategy is needed. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ewYxJv_H

PowerHouse Texas plays a critical role in bridging the science-policy education gap. Energy Policy Advisory Council member Dr. Erick C. Jones Jr. provided testimony to the Senate Committee on Natural Resources & Economic Development at the recent interim session hearing on the topic of Overcoming Federal Incompetence. Dr. Jones addressed opportunities in electricity generation, carbon border adjustments, and International LNG exports. Dr. Jones noted that the net-zero carbon agenda will increase electricity demand, allowing our state, as the #1 producer of electricity, to produce more electricity while lowering rates and increasing revenues through sales to other states. Among other points made, Dr. Jones recommended the legislature update the rainy day fund mechanism to also include revenue generated from cross border electricity revenues. #txlege #txenergy
