  • I'm always curious about how "unlimited PTO" works (or doesn't) at different companies. To me, it's about finding the right balance. Sounds like BuildWitt found theirs through "unrestricted PTO with guidelines". I like this. Sharing for those who've asked about the unlimited approach to PTO as another option to consider.

    We have had unlimited PTO at BuildWitt for the past 6 years. Has it worked? Yes and no. It’s been good, not great. Our exec team read Reed Hastings “No Rules Rules” about the culture at Netflix and we admired the approach. Hire A players and tell them to use common sense. Then have a culture of direct feedback to help coach when people make the wrong calls. In general, that approach has worked for us and we still work hard to hire A players with direct feedback and we have fewer guidelines than most companies. A few issues we found with unlimited PTO: Some people don’t take enough vacation A few people take too much vacation And sometimes, too many people take vacation at the same time But too much and too little are tough to define without guidelines. We’ve learned everyone views the world differently. Go figure. We have roughly 20ish people leaders, and it’s tough for them to coach their teams without a basic rulebook or guidelines. It’s a little like playing a board game with no rules…it wouldn’t be that much fun. So we’re now adding in basic guidelines around things like travel, expenses, credit card usage, and PTO. We changed PTO to “unrestricted” instead of “unlimited” and put some basic guidelines in to help guide common sense. Always with an eye to our company value of Keep it Simple. 📸 a pic I took on PTO

  • I'd say this client has embraced our guidance regarding documentation. "If it's not documented, it never happened." Documentation is crucial. Memories fade and recollection of conversations may become blurred, but documentation remains consistent. Much time can be saved from the "he said/she said" scenario when supporting documentation is available. Imagine trying to defend a DOL charge without documentation! Or trying to convince an employee that the raise they received is what you both agreed upon. Even verbal warnings should be documented.     Great leaders are great listeners. Being a leader should not be viewed as a license to increase the volume of rhetoric. Astute leaders know there is far more to be gained by surrendering the floor than by dominating it. Show me a leader who doesn’t recognize the value of listening to others, and I’ll show you a train wreck in the making. According to Mark Graban, I’ve heard leaders complain that “my employees won’t speak up.” Instead of labeling them as bad or uncaring employees, these same leaders should maybe look in the mirror and ask themselves how their people ended up that way. Listening is a core aspect of what Toyota calls “Respect for People?” but many people in leadership positions don’t listen; they may be hearing, but they are not listening.
