The Cape May Library Commission, along with its project team has been honored with a 2024 New Jersey Historic Preservation Award for the exceptional restoration and adaptive reuse of the Franklin Street School. This project exemplifies the power of community collaboration, involving local, county, state, and federal partners. Built in 1927, the school served as a segregated public institution until 1948 and later fell into disrepair. However, through dedicated community efforts beginning in the early 2000s, this historic building saw a new lease on life as a new county library. #HistoricPreservation #CommunityEngagement #AdaptiveReuse #CapeMay #PreservationNewJersey Join us on November 21st to honor our award recipients. The demolition of Olivia Antoinette “Etta” Helme Herbert’s former home began on August 19 in #HelmettaNJ #MiddlesexCounty to make way for new age-restricted housing. The Helme-Herbert house was the last of the three historic Helme family mansions located in the borough, belonging to Etta Helme, the daughter of Helmetta borough founder George W. Helme and the town’s namesake. Sites like these raise critical questions about historic preservation and its role in community identity and economic vitality. Read more about the Helme Mansion in our upcoming Fall Newsletter. #HistoricPreservation #CulturalHeritage #CommunityEngagement #Sustainability #Redevelopment
