  • 🦌 Did you know our trash is a serious problem for our wildlife? Not only can food bags and containers travel into yards, beaches, forests, and more, putting deer, foxes, squirrels, birds, raccoons, and other wild animals at risk, but wildlife and fish can also get tangled in, caught in, and suffocate in all types of trash - just like this raccoon whose head got stuck in a peanut butter jar. City of Hamilton Animal Services in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada reports that luckily this raccoon was saved by Officer Joey who was able to remove his head from the peanut butter jar. Not every story of injured wildlife ends so well. So, what can you do? ✔️ Cut up your food bags before you dispose of them ⁣ ⁣ ✔️ Never leave trash outside, no matter where you are ⁣ ⁣ ✔️ Pack any food you take outside of the home in plastic containers rather than plastic bags⁣ ✔️ Cut up all string, rope, netting, fishing line, and plastic drink holders before disposing of them ✔️ Crush all drink cans and food cans ✔️ Screw lids tightly on jars and containers ✔️ If you see an animal, bird, fish, or pet in distress, please try to help them or call for help Little changes can save the lives of many wild animals! ❤️ Photos from City of Hamilton Animal Services. #preventpetsuffocation #petsuffocation #petsafety #dogsuffocation #wildlife #protectwildlife #peanutbutterjar

  • 🎃 Fall is in the air, and that means Halloween is just around the corner! Now is a great time to review some safety tips for your pets!⁣ ⁣ ⁣⁣As much as we love Halloween, it brings certain risks to our favorite cats and dogs. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Some tips to remember:⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 👻 Costumes - Though it’s fun to dress our pets up in costumes, make sure your pet is comfortable in the costume before Halloween. Ensure there are no choking or chewing hazards on the costume your pet may ingest and that their hearing or vision is not inhibited by the costume. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 🍭 Candy - Yum! Just make sure your pet has no access to the candy and treats, especially if they include xylitol, chocolate, nuts, or raisins, which are very toxic to animals.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 🎃 Decorations - Festive decorations like pumpkins, gourds, fake spider webs, burning candles, glow sticks, and loud scary noise makers can also tempt or scare your pet. Always keep an eye on them! ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 🍬 Candy Bags and Treat Bags - To prevent pet suffocation, keep all candy bags and food bags safely out of reach of your pets. Cut them up and safely discard them. Pets can suffocate within minutes once they put their head in a bag. Make sure your children are aware of these dangers, too, and that their Halloween loot is safely stored away from your furry family members. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Visit our website to learn more about how you can keep your pets safe at all times! 🐶🐱 https://lnkd.in/gu6jSAqp #preventpetsuffocation #petsuffocation #petsafety #dogsuffocation #catsuffocation #halloweenpetsafety #halloween2024

  • 🔥 It's National Fire Pup Day! A special day to honor all the various dogs who have been volunteer firepups over the years. Canine firefighters, usually Dalmatians, have long been members of fire departments across the country. ⁣⁣⁣ With more fires each year, especially out west and in Canada, the stress on firefighters has increased dramatically. Several firehouses have adopted and trained pups as full-time therapy dogs to help with the firefighters’ anxiety and post-traumatic stress syndrome. These pups offer emotional support and help boost morale which is invaluable. ⁣ ⁣⁣ While Dalmatians are still recognized as firehouse mascots and are used to educate the public about fire safety while honoring the heroism of former fire pups, many other breeds, including rescue pups, are also playing a vital role in supporting our brave firefighters. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ National Fire Pup Day is also an excellent time to review your home fire safety plan to include your pets. Things to do:⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 👉🏼 Check on your smoke alarms and replace any batteries.⁣ ⁣⁣ 👉🏼 Consider installing monitored fire protection.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 👉🏼 Keep a fire extinguisher within reach. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 👉🏼 Have a set plan on how to remove your pets in case of an emergency, especially if they are crated. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 👉🏼 Teach your children about your Fire Safety Plan and how to call 911.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ And, give your sweet pups some extra hugs and playtime to celebrate this important tribute to the extraordinary fire dogs! 🐶 https://lnkd.in/gu6jSAqp #preventpetsuffocation #petsuffocation #petsafety #dogsuffocation #firepup #nationalfirepupday

  • September is Happy Cat Month!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This is the month to bring attention to the health, welfare, and importance of companion cats. Cats are actually very social animals, and they need the same love and personal attention dogs require. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Here are some important ways to ensure your cat’s happiness:⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 🐱 Make sure all veterinary needs and shots are up to date, including having an ample supply of flea and tick prevention on hand.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 🐱 Buy your furry feline a new toy, scratching post, or bed. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 🐱 Work with your cat to get him acclimated to a pet carrier. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 🐱 Venture outside with your cat as long as he’s on a leash and under supervision. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 🐱 Make sure to keep your cat away from toxic substances and poisons like chocolate, xylitol, lilies, sago palms, tulips, and insecticides.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 🐱 Visit your local animal shelter to add a rescue kitty as a companion to your cat. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 👉🏼Cats are also vulnerable to pet suffocation. Their agility allows them to easily jump on food counters, tables, and refrigerators, where they have easier access to food bags and containers.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ They are also prone to hiding in enclosed small and warm places like bins, plastic containers, and washers and dryers. So, remember to keep all food bags safely away from your curious cat and keep all trash cans safely secure to prevent pet suffocation. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣Enjoy your HAPPY CAT this month and every month! https://lnkd.in/gu6jSAqp #preventpetsuffocation #petsuffocation #petsafety #dogsuffocation #catsuffocation #happycatmonth

  • Happy Labor Day Weekend from Prevent Pet Suffocation! ⁣ ⁣ How will you be celebrating Labor Day this weekend? A barbecue? A cookout? S’mores around the campfire? Swimming? Watching some football? 🏈⁣💥🏊⁣⁣ ⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣Hopefully, delicious food, snacks, and beverages are definitely on the menu! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Yet, we still need to be vigilant with all snack bags, chip bags, marshmallow bags, hotdog buns bags, cookie bags, and other food bags around our pets, whether inside the house or outside in the yard. ⁣⁣Amidst all the fun, it’s easy to miss seeing our pets get access to any of these bags or containers. ⁣⁣⁣All of those food bags can lead to pet suffocation.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ This Labor Day Weekend, make sure you’ve taken the necessary steps to protect your pets.⁣⁣ No matter how you celebrate, it’s important to keep your pet’s safety in mind. Below are some tips to help protect your pets while preoccupied with entertaining or playing. ⁣ ⁣ ✔️ HOLIDAY FOODS - Make sure your pet can’t ingest any holiday foods and treats like bones, grapes, onions, chocolate, xylitol, and alcoholic beverages.⁣ ⁣ ✔️ FOOD BAGS - Keep all food bags like chip bags, snack bags, and plastic bags safely stored away from your pets to prevent pet suffocation. Cut up all bags and dispose of properly. With more guests and children around, it’s easy to get distracted and not notice what your pet is up to. ⁣ ⁣ ✔️ POOLS - Never leave your pets unsupervised around a pool, lake, or other bodies of water. Have your dog wear a flotation device when on boats. Don’t allow your dog to drink pool water which contains toxic chemicals. ⁣ ⁣ ✔️ SHADE - Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so if you’re spending time in the yard, at the beach, or at the pool, make sure your dogs have plenty of water and shade. ⁣ ⁣ ✔️ IDS - With the hustle and bustle of traveling over the weekend or celebrating with friends and family, you want to ensure your pet doesn’t escape or get lost. Make sure that your pet is microchipped or has an ID tag on his collar.⁣ Enjoy this last summer holiday weekend knowing your pets are safer.⁣ 🐶🐱 (Photo Credit - Thank you to @ivyrose_and_wendell for the great photo.)
