🧯 Fighting Physician Burnout with Leadership In the growing battle between healthcare providers and exhaustion, it's imperative that health leaders know the best ways to tackle the root causes of physician burnout. Many authorities in healthcare recommend a multi-faceted approach in their initiatives, focusing on practice efficiency, leadership development, organizational culture, and mental health. In a piece for the AMA, Dr. Louis Jeansonne, a leader at Ochsner Health, outlines some critical aspects for healthcare leaders to take note of when taking steps to fight physician burnout. Dr. Jeansonne says it's important not just to have teamwork in your health organization, but make it apparent to everyone in the system that you're working together. Even in meeting with IT employees, they emphasize that their job isn't simply to keep computers running, but to take care of patients by doing so. An overall goal for everyone in the organization to follow helps get everyone in the same direction. 💡 Tired of the administrative burden of running your own private practice? However, it poses a great opportunity to find the kind of work environment that aligns with your values. According to the American Medical Association, here are some key steps to finding the right fit with transitioning to private practice: 1. Identify Your Priorities: Consider factors like location, patient population, and compensation. 2. Understand Practice Settings: Explore different practice models to find what suits your lifestyle. 3. Evaluate Support and Culture: Have conversations about what kind of workplace culture you want to cultivate and what kind of support you want to provide. 4. 💸 The Transition from Fee-For-Service to Value-Based Care Healthcare has traditionally been dominated by the fee-for-service model, but with the shift to value-based care in recent times, fee-for-service may finally be on its way out. However, health organizations will still face many obstacles in the transition between these two models. According to Ashley Thakur from Medcity News, the path forward is especially challenging when it comes to data sharing and interoperability. That is, exchanging data between different systems without the losing its meaning. Successful adoption of value-based care requires a unified approach to data management. Payers and providers alike must be ready to integrate disparate data systems, which will result in better care management and a smoother transition to value-based care. 💡 Is running your own private healthcare practice becoming too burdensome? ✏️ Appealing Prior Authorization Denials According to a study by KFF in 2022, only 10% of denied requests for prior authorization sought appeals to overturn the denial. However, 83% of these appeals resulted in the denial being overturned and the prior authorization request approved. Despite this, many physicians and patients still don't request appeals for prior authorization denials. Why? A survey from the American Medical Association reveals that 94% of doctors believe that prior authorization causes delays to necessary care. 19% of doctors also said that prior authorization resulted in a serious adverse event leading to hospitalization, or worse, more life-threatening complications. Many doctors shy away from appeals due to staff shortages, limited resources, or the belief that the appeal won't succeed. It's past time for reforms to take place for insurers to reduce prior authorization volume and add transparency to prior auth requirements. What do you think? ⚙️ Want to reduce the administrative burden of running your own private practice? 🤝 How to Bridge Health Equity with Profitability With the data for health inequity being well established among US healthcare leaders, they still find difficulty seeing meaningful results in advancing health equity. According to an article by Bain & Co, while 78% of healthcare executives say they have a health equity strategy, only 18% say that this strategy is well-defined with clear goals and metrics. Moving the needle on health equity has been slow due to perceptions from health leaders; about 30% believe that there are no business motivations to its improvement. This often leads to health equity being treated as a philanthropic effort, with other profit-focused goals taking priority. The article emphasizes that closing the gap in health equity is not only morally imperative, but creates opportunities to reduce the overall cost of care and improve patient outcomes. 💡 Are you weighed down by the administrative burden of running your own private practice? ☀️ How to Help Employees Feel Valued in Your Private Practice Whether or not employees feel valued by their health organization leaders, physicians or otherwise, heavily contributes to employee retention and physician burnout. A study by Christine Sinsky, et al. from the American Medical Association explores exactly what impacts the feeling of employee and physician value in healthcare. They identified these key factors that contributed to feeling valued: 1. Physical Safety: Employees feel more valued when their physical safety is considered by health leaders. For example, having proper personal protective equipment and COVID screenings. 2. Compensation: Those feeling undervalued reported pay cuts and focus from the leaders on profits instead of patient care. 3. Transparency: Valued workers noted frequent and clear communication from leaders, hearing information from several sources within their health organization. 4. Teamwork: More feeling of value was correlated with the importance of teamwork in their organizations, with the study noting a lack of comments about teamwork in those who did not feel as valued. 5. Empathetic Leadership: Those who felt valued indicated that their leaders were compassionate and supportive, being physically present and aware of staff needs. 6. Organizational Support: More value is found in organizations with adequate staffing, flexibility, and those that promoted a healthy work-life balance. 💡 Priority Practice Management can help manage the administrative side of your private physician practice.
