We've been hearing from a lot of contractors who are experiencing a decline in backlog and opportunities this 3rd and 4th quarter of 2024. While it's not uncommon during an election year, it's a reminder of why refining your strategy every year is so important to your long-term success. #proaccel #businessstrategy

I've been hearing from a lot of contractors who are experiencing a decline in backlog and opportunities this 3rd and 4th quarter of 2024. While it's not uncommon during an election year, it's a reminder of why refining your strategy every year is so important to your long-term success. You need diversification (private vs public work), you need quarterly milestones and goals that are tied to more long-term goals, and you need metrics to make sure you're hitting those goals. AND YOU NEED ACCOUNTABILITY!! BUT even more important you need to ALWAYS understand where your company is at every quarter of the year. What are your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats? Who has the skills to move each goal forward and what new skills are needed? What new connections do you need to start nurturing, what network needs to be leveraged more, what market needs to be tapped, what certifications do you need to stand out, and so much more? I was helping a contractor build up their estimating department. When a new project came out that I saw had huge potential for them I quickly identified several scope items that I knew didn't have much competition bidding. We determined he had one contact who would bid solely to him for this scope. Guess what.....we got the job and yes it was because he had a great relationship with that subcontractor who gave him the edge to land the $25 MM project!! Understanding the threats to your business well before they happen allows you to better leverage your strengths and navigate these downturns. BUT preparation requires a proactive mindset. It means taking your focus and head out the weeds of of the day-to-day operations frequently throughout the year to keep you focused on the long-term success of your company. As the owner, you're the ONLY one truly worrying about the future of your business. It's you who stays up at night worrying about payroll or projects tanking. Your employees are focused on the tasks at hand. This is why hiring a consultant, advisor, or coach can be pivotal to your future success. They can provide the outside perspective needed to help you stay ahead of the curve and ensure you're prepared for whatever comes next. Stay strong and keep pushing forward. #proaccel #constructionoperations #profit #economy

I've been talking to quite a few contractors, including existing clients, who are making a lot of money BUT don't understand how and why. Although a fantastic problem to have, it's so incredibly important to figure out how you're making your money and why you're in the green. Getting clear on what's working and what's not working can bring great success to your company. In addition, it'll reduce so much stress because now you'll have the confidence to bypass projects and opportunities that don't align with your goals and financial interests. Imagine if you can find out, with confidence, that you can eliminate a large percentage of your daily efforts and make MORE profits by just focusing on what's actually moving the needle in your company! Sometimes you need an outside perspective to help you bring this all together. #proaccel #constructionoperations #profit

What's working for one contractor may turn out to be a disaster for you. It’s easy to see what another company is doing and think, “We need to be doing that!” What's most dangerous is that when you try it, you push this new implementation so much, even though it's not working well for your company, and it does the reverse effect.....you lose money and overwhelm your employees. There are so many factors to consider when taking suggestions from other contractors, networking groups, or peer groups....like the type and skill level of your employees, where your business and projects are located, the kind of projects you take on, the niche you’re in, your current cash flow situation, your capital stacks, just to mention a few. You can’t just copy and paste someone else’s strategy and expect it to fit perfectly. Instead, look at what worked for others from a high level. Think about what you can cherry-pick and adapt to suit your company’s unique needs. The only way to figure this out is to take action, start small, and be patient. Change doesn’t happen overnight. Most things you try won’t work right away. AND that’s normal. But some things will click. When they do, take what works and run with it. #proaccel

I've been fortunate to experience both ends of the spectrum when it comes to workplace culture. I've worked in environments where I couldn’t wait to get to work on Monday mornings, and I’ve also been in situations where the dread of the alarm clock was almost overwhelming. One thing I’ve learned is that workplace culture makes all the difference. In the best cultures, employees are supported, respected, and rewarded ..... both financially AND personally. I remember sitting at the table having lunch with my coworkers (on many occasions) and all of us saying how we can't mess up this project because we all love our jobs and don't want to lose them!! Trust me when I tell you....we pushed the living day lights out of those jobs and we all held ourselves accountable!!! In these environments, people are excited to contribute, go the extra mile, and take ownership of their work. It’s amazing what people can achieve when they feel valued and secure. On the other hand, I’ve also seen cultures driven by fear, finger-pointing, and a lack of trust. In these environments, employees are hesitant to make decisions, constantly worried about making mistakes, and often feel like they’re walking on eggshells. This kind of atmosphere drains energy, absolutely destroys creativity, and ultimately holds everyone back. Leaders --->>> if you want to get the most out of your team, create a culture where people feel safe, supported, and valued. It’s not just about treating people well but also it’s about unlocking their full potential. Video --- fireworks display from the bell tower of the Church of St Rocco in Siano, Italy a few nights ago. Nothing to do with post but would love to share with my #LinkedIn network. #workculture #proaccel #bethebest

Companies dont make things happen Its the people employed by the Company that make $hit happen Some companies have more awesome people than their competition Assuming that everyone who works for a company is committed to developing people is a mistake And that sucks If you have an attraction or retention problem, think about what its going to take to condition your leaders to systematically develop the people on their team. ⛏️Did you luck out in working with an awesome leader, or was every leader awesome? #InvestInWhoYouGot PS: Im gonna be sharing an attraction & retention weapon next week check the comments for the link🧐

"Flexibility" when discussing work life balance in the workplace must be clearly defined or else this topic will cause a mess in your business. First off to the employee, it's life THEN work. Choose a career and position that fits your lifestyle best. You’ll be a much happier person with better relationships. Yes this is possible and don't let the old school mindset tell you otherwise. Now to business...It's important to get a good understanding of a new employees expectations during the hiring process. It's also very important for the employer to understand their own needs for this role they are hiring for. I feel a lot of employers don't fully understand themselves what's expected for their new employee. I also feel employers need to not only understand what that role looks like today BUT also how it'll look in 5 years from now and keep those every evolving responsibilities into consideration. What do you think? Photo: taken outside an old home in Naples. I'm enjoying my life because work will always be there when I get back. Choose the lifestyle you want. #proaccel

CULTURE shapes our beliefs, traditions, and the way we see the world. Whether in our personal lives or business, understanding and valuing culture is so important! On a personal level, culture gives us a sense of identity and belonging. It helps us connect with our roots and understand who we are. Embracing our culture also makes us more open to other people's traditions and perspectives, which is key to building strong AND respectful relationships. I feel, and we should all feel, that in the business world, culture is just as important. A positive company culture can drive creativity, keep teams together who always want to collaborate together, and create a great work atmosphere. Plus, being aware of different cultures helps in communicating better, working effectively with teams that have a very diverse global background (more common in mega-companies), and connecting with customers in a meaningful way. Culture is more than just a set of customs or traditions. It’s a big part of who we are and how we interact with the world and our co-workers. Whether in life or business, understanding and appreciating culture is important for personal growth and success. Video: one of the many fireworks happening while we were walking with hundreds perhaps, thousands of people behind a dozen or so Saints in last night's procession. Many families, including mine, donated money and sponsored fireworks during the 3-plus hour walk through the streets. The saint in this video is Saint Rocco who we are celebrating at this feast. There was an amazing band further in the distance also a group saying prayers on a loud speaker. This is part of my culture and tradition and I'm VERY PROUD of it!!!!! My parents have spent a lot of time and effort making sure my brothers and I know our roots but also taught us to love the country that allowed them to get out of poverty....the USA. This is one of so many amazing videos I have of last nights experience. Truly breathtaking. #culture #values #proaccel #companyculture

It's Friday, what do your project plans look like for the following weeks on your job site.... My simple Friday habit was always putting together a 2 week and 4 week look ahead. It was a simple Excel schedule. I shared it with my key crew personnel and owners reps. It also held them accountable and eliminated the excuses of "you never told me". I always worked for self perform GCs so I ran my own crews and subs. I had tonssss of O'Crap moments. I thought I needed to release more rebar in 3 weeks but now I needed it sooner. I thought I had enough 2x4 and 2x8 but now I needed them sooner. I thought I didn't need to electrician until 3 weeks out, but I'm ahead of schedule and now I need them in two weeks. The list goes on and on. Staying organized and getting into the habit of quietly spending 15 minutes on a Friday morning to put together these simple schedules when your crews head out after your morning huddle (you better be doing these also) will save you an insane amount of headaches. If you're a sub, these look aheads force you to engage in necessary planning with your crews AND you can educate and warn the GC super or PM of upcoming inspections needed or subs that are lagging and keeping you from moving faster. This will help you strengthen your relationship with that GC. You need to understand that your the leader of your project. Your crews rely on YOU to be organized and get sh** done. Everyday is full of surprises. Take small steps like look ahead schedules to minimize these surprises. #proaccel #construction #simplehabits #personaldevelopment
