Pro-Accel Employee Promoting Tip! If you wish to introduce a new position in your growing construction company, I highly suggest you do your homework and get very clear on what that new position means for your company today AND how it'll shape your future. I hear way too many stories of growing contractors who introduce a new position in their growing company by just telling one of their employees they're promoted without even knowing how to position that employee for success BOTH for the company and themselves. Know the full list of skills and responsibilities of what's needed for that role, hire or promote the person who has the most matching skills, THEN develop employees to quickly gain the skill gap they have (everyone has skill gaps). I suggest you also understand the roles/responsibilities of whom this person will be reporting to and try to offset some of the responsibilities to the newly appointed position. Why? Since you are growing, the person who is now this new positions supervisor will ALSO be taking on new responsibilities and skills needed to bring the company to the next level. They need to evolve and grow as well! It's not about one role, every role changes when companies grow. #proaccel #constructionoperations #constructionconsulting

Helping ambitious contractors achieve greater profits, improved cash flow, and sustainable growth with proven strategies that deliver real results with hands-on experience / Construction Operations Consulting

I see foremen getting less info on expectations as companies grow. Early on, they were a major part of the team, but as the company grew, they can often get sidelined. In larger companies, they sometimes don’t even get mentioned. These are the designated leaders in the trenches driving the production you NEED for sustainable growth. Make sure you’re setting clear expectations daily and keep them involved in your project meetings. Superintendents might not always communicate everything because they don’t always speak the same language as those physically doing the work. If your foremen know what’s expected, they’ll immediately understand what’s needed. Keep your supers in the loop, but get your foremen involved when talking costs and production goals. You'll see a major positive difference in your productions! #proaccel #construction #leadership #growth

It always made me feel better selecting a subcontractor who called me before a bid and warned me about some busts in the plans. Nobody wants to hear about problems BUT when a contractor goes out of their way to tell you to be careful with ABC scope or XYZ in the schedule you know they are looking through the plans and know what they're talking about. Sometimes the competition tells them to call you so you can increase your price. BUT that's where your skills need to shine and call the bluff. Usually, that's not the case. Perhaps they got burnt on that particular issue in the past due to incompetent field managers and their competition knows better. You just don't know BUT they're paying attention. Yes -- they are usually higher in price because they saw potential risk, BUT you know they'll get the job done more efficiently. The best part is when you call their competition and ask them if they're covered in that particular situation and they say "Don't worry about it". I've been in that situation many times and guess what happens..... they eventually want a change order when they realize they didn't spend enough time going through the plans OR they were just incompetent to realize the risk before the bid. This destroys trust. Keeping your estimators sharp will give you some of the greatest ROI. #estimating #bidtime #changeorders #construction #proaccel

From Assistant Project Manager to COO: The Journey of a Project Manager Ever wonder what it takes to rise from an entry-level Assistant Project Manager (APM) to a Chief Operating Officer (COO) in the construction world? It’s not just about moving up the ladder, it’s about gaining the right skills, mindset, and leadership abilities at every stage. In my latest blog and video, I dive into the lifecycle of a project manager, and give you my take by explaining each step of the journey: 1) As an APM, you learn to manage tasks, paperwork, and stay ahead of the game. 2) As a Project Manager, you take on real leadership, owning projects and solving problems. 3) Senior Project Managers think big-picture, manage multiple projects, and shape company culture. 4) At the top as COO, it's all about vision, strategy, and leading the entire team toward long-term success. To be a great construction professional you need to be creative and be a self-starter. Ownership needs to respect this as well.

To be a great construction professional you need to be creative and be a self-starter. Ownership needs to respect this as well. Many people (including me) talk a lot about implementing processes in your business. BUT what nobody seems to talk about is how putting too much process in a business will turn your people into robots who'll eventually hate their job and leave. There I said it. Honestly, most processes won't even be followed. In the construction business, standard operating procedures (SOPs) can eliminate a lot of fire drills, especially when expanding, but it's crucial not to go overboard with them. While processes help standardize and should be used in key areas like change orders, billing, safety protocols, project startup, project kickoff, estimating (pursuit, risk identification, analyzing subs, etc.), and any ongoing task that ABSOLUTELY MUST HAPPEN a certain way to keep your company moving in the same direction, the goal is to maintain consistency without messing up your employee's creativity. Every project is unique and comes with its own set of challenges. We need to empower our teams, field managers, estimators, and other key players to tap into their skills and creativity and find ways to value engineer projects and utilize their unique skills to get the project done. That’s why we hire them, after all. The right SOPs move the company forward, but the magic happens when you let your talent run with their expertise. To sum this up.....Don’t let SOPs box your people in. Keep creativity alive, and you'll see growth and innovation on every project. What do you think? #proaccel #constructionoperations

With competition growing and more contractors telling me they have less backlog this second half of 2024 (election year is a major factor), it’s more important than ever to have a solid business development plan. It’s not just about landing the next big job, it’s about building strong relationships and real connections that will help your business grow over time. If you focus on these relationships, you’ll have an edge to handle the ups and downs that come every few years. Stay ahead by making sure your network is strong and ready to support you when things get tough! In one of my latest videos/blogs, I discuss my take on business development. If you’re barely making payroll week to week, moving from one project to the next without solving this critical issue, it’s time to ask yourself.....What are you doing to fix it? The worst thought or solution you can have is....my next project will fix this problem! Are you analyzing and improving your labor productivity by eliminating those consistent bottlenecks or are you just hiring more help who you think will save the day? Are you taking a deep dive into your estimating practices to see where you might be falling short or do you think it's because you can't find good estimators and you'll eventually find one? Are you pursuing opportunities that better align with your team’s skills or you "have the best in the industry" and just going through a rough patch? You must find the root cause of your cash flow problems. Perhaps you need stronger back-office support or more rigorous accounting practices to chase down payments more effectively? Whatever the issue, continuing to operate month after month with the same cash flow problems is a recipe for disaster. It WON'T go away on its own or by thinking the next project will be better. I speak with many contractors who are managing their cash flow just fine. So, what are you doing to change the way you perform estimates, manage projects, track progress, and one of the most overlooked parts of yearly strategies I help with.... continuously improve????!!!! The longer you wait to address these issues, the closer you get to a breaking point! The time to act is ALWAYS now. I'm curious to hear from those who've experienced a bad cash flow period, or my CFO connections.....based on your experience, what would you suggest as a good starting point for a contractor struggling with cash flow? #cashflow #proaccel #constructionoperations
