Project Safety Coordinator at Kraemer North America

It was early 2021. I’d survived living on Long Island, NY during the height of COVID, moved to Utah, and then to Austin, Texas. I worked briefly in the prison system in Texas and decided that was not what I wanted to do with my life. I hopped on Indeed and started scrolling, and scrolling, and scrolling…and scrolling. “Safety and Loss Control Specialist.” I don’t know what “loss control” means and I am definitely (emphasis on ‘definitely’) not qualified for this job. *quick apply* A couple of weeks later a got a call from a lovely HR lady who wanted to do a pre-screening and schedule a phone interview with the VP of Safety and Loss Control. I bombed that phone interview in the worst way. So, I enrolled in 132 hours of safety and OSHA centric coursework to learn the answers to all the questions I’d been asked in the interview. To my surprise, I was granted an in-person interview. I think I bombed that interview also, but at least they knew I was eager to learn. In May of 2021 I was hired at PCSI - Professional Contract Services, Inc as a Safety and Loss Control Specialist (though I was far from specializing in safety or loss control at that point). They decided to take a chance on me, and my passion for safety was born. Within my first week of employment, my colleague, Emory, suggested that I go to school for Occupational Safety and Health as he had. Three years later I hold two degrees, three undergrad certificates, and a professional certificate in the field, in part, thanks to him! Our supervisor, the VP of Safety and Loss Control, constantly challenged us. If we had a problem, she pushed us to find a solution. When I was at my worst, she encouraged me to strive to be my best. At times I thought Barbara was too hard on us, but the truth is that she saw potential in us and she pushed us to maximize that potential. She wanted us to succeed and she refused to let us fall short. I only worked for PCSI for three years before moving back to Colorado, but I’m grateful for every day of my time there. I worked alongside so many incredible individuals, many of whom have become close friends. I started my safety career there. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to those who encouraged me and helped me to achieve my goals and get me to where I am now. If you are not familiar with PCSI, they are a nonprofit that provides support services to hospitals, military bases, and private-sector clients throughout the U.S. Operating under AbilityOne—a federal initiative for employing people with disabilities—PCSI staffs its award-winning service teams with disabled veterans and other people with disabilities. They’re also one of the most amazing groups of people you will ever encounter. All Abilities, One Mission.
