As we celebrate Black disabled leaders through history, today we want to share Dr. Sylvia Walker (1937-2004). A blind disability rights activist and professor at Howard University, Dr. Walker established the Howard University Center for Disability and Socioeconomic Policy Studies. She co-founded the American Association of People with Disabilities and served as Vice-Chair of the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities under President Clinton. She is the first deaf Black woman attorney in the U.S. Today we'd like to spotlight Claudia L. Gordon, Esq., a staunch advocate for disability rights, working to eliminate barriers for the deaf and hard of hearing community. Claudia served in the Obama administration in the White House Office of Public Engagement, advocating for policies at the national level. Black disabled leaders have played a crucial role in shaping the disability rights movement in the U.S. Do you know about Donald Galloway (1938-2011), who lost sight after being struck by a bow and arrow at age 13? Here are some of his achievements: -Worked for the Berkeley Center for Independent Living and the DC branch -Served on the Colorado Governor's Council on Disability -Was the first blind person to serve as a Peace Corps Director in Jamaica -Served on the D.C. Commission on Human Rights -Filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government to secure the right for blind people to serve on juries #WeAreProFound #DisabilityLeadership #BlackHistory ID: 1.
