Assisting victims of mass atrocities & serious human rights abuses to find justice by all available legal mechanisms.
About us
PEJ is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and its mission is to assist victims of mass atrocities and serious human rights abuses to find justice through all available legal mechanisms. We leverage our expertise in litigation and trial work to build the capacity of communities and organizations on the ground to collect evidence and document abuses. We carry out research to identify the most promising legal fora to pursue accountability and guide appropriate cases through the legal process. By combining training, mentoring, and independent legal consulting, we aim to create a sustainable model for fighting impunity, realizing accountability, and permanently disabling and dismantling the criminal networks responsible for the atrocities we address.

Join us today, October 1st, to learn about the catastrophic impacts of the Kakhovka Dam explosion. PEJ, with Vitsche Berlin, Truth Hounds, and Stratcom Centre, is delighted to invite you to learn more about the ecological consequences of this crime. Tune into the livestream here: https://lnkd.in/eDzDj2mD. We will discuss the environmental impacts of the war and explore further perspectives about the region. On June 6, the one-year anniversary of the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam, PEJ and Truth Hounds released a comprehensive report about its consequences. The dam’s obliteration had far-reaching impacts on Ukraine’s people, their livelihoods, the economy, and different ecosystems. Its destruction should be treated as an environmental war crime. Join the discussion on October 1 on the environmental impact of the Russian war, featuring experts from Truth Hounds and Project Expedite Justice, who will present research on the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam and its impact on the environment, economy, and nuclear safety. 📅 When: October 1st, 18:30–21:00 🏢 Where: Heinrich Böll Stiftung, Berlin 🎙 Language: English with translation into German 🔗 Register here: https://lnkd.in/dvsHdKst The destruction of the Kakhovka Dam on 6 June 2023 was the single most visible environmental war crime with vast consequences not only for the irreversibly damaged ecosystems up- and downstream but for the entire wider region, its economy, and European ecology as well. The loss of the electric capacity of the dam’s hydropower plant destabilizes the supply all over South Ukraine. The decrease of the lake’s water level poses a danger to the reliability of the cooling for the Zaporizhia Nuclear power station. At this event, Truth Hounds and Project Expedite Justice will present their joint research “Submerged” on the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam and its impacts on the residents, the ecosystems, the agriculture and its implications for international justice. The authors of the study will present main findings and discuss further perspectives for the region. 🔗 The full text of the report by Truth Hounds and Project Expedite Justice — https://lnkd.in/gYR4RR4f At the same time, the event kicks off the broader "Ukrainians for Ecology" campaign of the Berlin based NGO Vitsche, aiming to draw more attention to environmental effects of the war in general and to create and spread expertise.

On September 11, 2024, Project Expedite Justice (PEJ) participated in the United for Justice annual conference in Kyiv, Ukraine. United for Justice works to create accountability for international crimes against civilians and their property, particularly those arising from the brutal, ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Its annual conference calls attention to Russia’s ongoing crimes against humanity and war crimes – and brings together high-level stakeholders who can work toward the goal of investigating and prosecuting those responsible. Only by doing so can Ukraine achieve accountability and redress. Russia’s pillage of grain is one of the largest full-scale thefts in recent history. PEJ’s Ukraine team has established that farmers and agrarians were deliberately targeted to destroy Ukraine’s economy. As the only rule-of-law NGO that has such extensive focus on Ukraine’s agrarian community, PEJ has a vital role to play in ensuring that Russian crimes against it are neither forgotten nor without consequence. PEJ shared findings about the targeting and pillage of Ukraine resources as part of a panel discussion on the destruction of grain and port infrastructures. PEJ Ukraine Program Director spoke at a panel discussion on the Destruction of Grain and Port Infrastructure in Ukraine and highlighted the vast scope and breadth of the damage Russia has inflicted on Ukraine’s agrarian sector – and proposed solutions to help victims recover, rebuild, and obtain full recompense. The United for Justice conference featured many other distinguished speakers and representatives. Those invited included representatives of the European Union, the International Criminal Court, The Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group, leading experts in international law, Prosecutors General of European states, and Ukrainian government officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Karim Ahmad Khan were both in attendance. PEJ’s work in Ukraine is made possible thanks to the generous support of The Howard G. Buffett Foundation. We are proud to have earned their trust in our efforts to seek justice for the Ukrainian victims of Russian aggression. A tax-exempt, 501(c)3 nonprofit, PEJ has its headquarters in the United States, but its reach is worldwide. We help victims of mass atrocities and serious human rights abuses obtain justice through all available legal mechanisms. If you have questions or inquiries, please contact ukraine@projectexpeditejustice.org or media@projectexpeditejustice.org. Pictured: Chloe Gilroy, Program Officer, the Howard G.
