The RHA’s Net Zero Forum met for the fifth time yesterday to hear how zero emission lorry “demonstrator” projects are progressing. How commercial vehicles perform in real-world conditions is crucial, as no haulier or coach operator wants a broken-down vehicle due to a misunderstanding over its capability for the job to which the vehicle has been assigned.   We were therefore pleased to hear from Dr Alistair Barnes (Innovate UK) overseeing the Zero Emission and Hydrogen Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme and Professor David Cebon (Centre of Sustainable Road Freight) on Project Jolt. I particularly welcome the commitment by both programmes to share key data and reports over the coming months and years to help our sector plan for the introduction of these vehicles, and the RHA will promote this information where we can.   Subject to conditions, there is also an opportunity for hauliers to get involved in Project Jolt. Greenwashing the Olympics... It is gratifying to see that Hydrogen Insight has picked up our letter to the International Olympic Committee, signed by more than 120 scientists, engineers and academics: about Toyota's use of the Olympic Games to promote hydrogen as a transport fuel. https://lnkd.in/dufNV8gC Toyota sells 11 million fossil-fuel powered cars ever year. It also sells about 4000 of its loss-leading Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The only justification for continuing to sell hydrogen vehicles is to cause confusion and delay in the market for electric vehicles. This will significantly increase the company's revenue (selling fossil-powered cars for many more years) at the expense of delaying the transition to EVs. Toyota are using the vast advertising opportunity of the Olympic Games to promote this damaging, greenwashing message to billions of people around the world. I am very grateful to 120 colleagues who are willing to call-out this cynical, environmentally damaging behaviour. Hydrogen powered trucks are 2x the capital cost and 3x the operating cost of battery electric trucks.  These numbers are very unlikely to improve for the reasons explained here: https://lnkd.in/dZXn9_SD There is no way that fleet operators will be able to afford the costs of hydrogen trucks for any operation... QED. It is time to stop waiting for the hydrogen industry to deliver 3 engineering miracles: 1. Engineering the vehicles to be sufficiently low cost to purchase, fuel and maintain to compete with EVs. Build an industry and supply chain to match. 2. Build an entire industry to manufacture sufficient green hydrogen at scale, given the vast amounts of renewable electricity needed to run hydrogen trucks (3x more electricity than EVs) https://lnkd.in/dJXkxi3f 3. Build a system that can deliver sufficient hydrogen to filling stations around the country and the world... noting that that filling stations are not connected by pipelines and it takes 18 hydrogen tube trailers at 700bar pressure to transport the same amount of energy as one diesel tanker. The logistics industry needs to move forward quickly to decarbonise by 2050..not delay indefinitely, waiting for miracles. Andy Salter

Toyota's Olympic Message The Toyota Mirai, which is a hydrogen fuel-cell car, has been named the official vehicle of the 2024 Paris Olympics. It will be used alongside 10 hydrogen fuel-cell coaches to transport athletes and visitors. Some concerned colleagues and I are have written an open letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to express our concern that Toyota’s promotion of a hydrogen car is scientifically misaligned with net-zero and will damage the reputation of the 2024 Olympic Games, set to begin next month. https://lnkd.in/eby83A6S We are asking the IOC to to enforce that Toyota switches the official Olympics vehicle, and the entire Olympic vehicle fleet, to 100% Battery Electric Vehicles for the 2024 Games. Would you consider adding your name to the letter? It is now internationally accepted in industry and academia that electrification of vehicles is the most effective way to decarbonize the transport sector. We believe that the promotion of hydrogen vehicles in this way is highly detrimental to international efforts to decarbonize transport, because billions of people around the world watching the Olympics will be exposed to misleading information. We are inviting qualified academics, scientists and engineers from around the world to add their signatures to the letter by completing this form. At the beginning of this month, we kicked off two exciting projects that are set to make a huge impact on our mission to decarbonise the logistics sector. 🌍 Project JOLT (Joint Operator Logistics Trial) has launched, led by Centre for Sustainable Road Freight (SRF) and involving partners like John Lewis Partnership, Volvo Trucks, and Flexible Power Systems. This initiative aims to transform the UK’s logistics sector by transitioning to electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs). Experts from University of Cambridge and Heriot-Watt University will analyse data on vehicle performance and operational efficiency to help move towards zero-emission fleets. 🚛 Additionally, Welch Group is thrilled to join the third cohort of the Connected Places Catapult Freight Innovation Fund Accelerator. Funded by the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, this initiative supports SMEs with up to £150,000 in grant funding and comprehensive trial support to develop and implement innovative solutions. As partners, we will tackle key industry challenges and advance sustainable logistics solutions.
