  • Meet the #PMJCollege Fellows! Elahe Gharouni Jafari is a PhD student at the School of Project Management, University of Sydney, researching ‘Collaboration under Collaborative Contracts.’ Before starting her PhD, she contributed to four major research projects focused on transport and affordable housing in Iran. She has co-authored several journal papers and two books, Project Delivery Methods and Building Information Modelling. In 2022, she received the Best Paper Award from Emerald. Kobra is also an active peer reviewer and was recognized as the Best Reviewer by the International Journal of Construction Management. Kaiwen Jiang is a third-year PhD student at the Research Institute of Complex Engineering Management, Tongji University, Shanghai, China. He is also interested in other megaproject management issues related to uncertainties, such as systems integration, program management, and stakeholder management. He has won the Best Track Paper in the EURAM 2024. Dr Roksana Jahan Tumpa is a Lecturer in Project Management within the School of Engineering and Technology at Central Queensland University, Sydney, Australia. She serves as both an educator and researcher, boasting a diverse array of peer-reviewed publications spanning project management, higher education, sustainability in construction projects and retention of women in construction. Throughout Roksana’s career, she has received several awards, including the Research Training Program (RTP) stipend Award, Walt Lipke Project Governance and Control Excellence Award, Student Voice Commendation Award, Best Paper Award, Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Winner Award, People's Choice Awards, and Best Presentation Awards. Thus far, the ability of PMOs to support interorganizational projects and practices has been restricted—this goes for project management practice as well as a lack of concepts and theoretical reasoning from research in the domain of project studies. Against this background, this article distinguishes four types of PMOs and identifies promising organizational design elements pointing to functions and barriers, as well as to the interorganizational bridging practices of PMOs in support of their interorganizational responsibilities.”   #PMJ #interorganizationalcollaboration #organizationdesign #projectbasedorganizing #projectmanagementoffice #projectnetwork #organizationalboundaries

Using an organizational design perspective, this study models nine different PMO service delivery categories along scope, frequency, and delivery entity and identifies their particular OPM contexts (i.e., landscapes). Two hundred and sixty-five responses to a global survey identified nine types of OPM landscapes, grouped into three regions, with their particular logic of investment in OPM and their particular PMO service mix. The framework helps practitioners set up their PMOs in line with established practices. Academics benefit from a base for theorizing organizational designs using OPM.”   #PMJ organizational project management, project management offices, organizational design, organizational design archetypes, PMO types

Building on extant literature, this article addresses this fundamental question by explicating three distinct explanations of the raison d'etre of salient organization design arrangements: Functional, Legitimacy, and Agency. Conceiving these explanations as coexisting, interacting logics of organizing, the article argues to draw upon the powerful concept of logic multiplicity to pave the way for integrating diverse theoretical perspectives. Thus, the article contributes to the organization design stream of research in project studies by developing a typology of organization design logics and proposing a way forward for pursuing pluralistic theorizing.”   #PMJ #organizationaldesign #projectbasedorganization #projectorientedorganization #logicmultiplicity #projectmanagementoffice #portfolio #program #organizationalarchitecture #conceptual

This article examines these complexities, employing an engaged scholarship approach with a group of practitioners facing a significant challenge regarding collaborative governance of a major project. This approach enables us to develop a framework for major projects, which includes four types of collaborative governance mechanism: sensemaking, structural, procedural, and relational. Our work has implications for interorganizational design, suggesting that a project management office (PMO) could play a leadership and integrative role in collaborative governance.”   #PMJ #organizationaldesign #collaborativegovernance #majorprojects #engagedscholarship #coownership

The framework was introduced in the year 2000 and has developed from a hierarchical control regime toward a more holistic and relationship-based governance model. We show how this development relates to the evolving field of governance of projects. Although the impact of the framework is promising overall, we observe one area with considerable room for improvement: the ability to learn from previous projects. We discuss how to move on from here and implement effective learning cycles that draw on ex-post evaluations of completed projects.”   #PMJ #governanceofprojects #governanceframeworks #publicprojects #evaluation #learning

Using the data from 210 members from 69 cross-functional project teams, the results of polynomial regression and response surface analyses indicate that the high congruence between empowering leadership and perceived empowerment enhances informal leadership emergence, then promotes creativity to facilitate performance outcomes eventually. Informal leadership emerged under the insufficient empowerment condition with higher psychological empowerment rather than the excessive empowerment condition with higher empowering leadership. The study added to the project governance body of knowledge by confirming the promoting mechanism for project performance from the congruence perspective of leader-given and subordinate-perceived empowerment.”   #PMJ #congruence #empoweringleadership #psychologicalempowerment #leadershipemergence #projectperformance
