♟️Chess and Innovation: Strategic Moves in the Department of Defense 🚀 In the world of Chess, as in the Department of Defense, every move counts. Both arenas require strategic thinking, anticipation of future scenarios, and the courage to take calculated risks. Just like a grandmaster, the DoD must stay several steps ahead, adapting to ever-changing landscapes and outmaneuvering challenges with precision. Innovation within the DoD mirrors the complexity and elegance of a chess game. How to Build a POAM When Stakeholders Won’t Give You Deadlines (Asking for a Friend 😜) Step 1: Assume They’re on a Secret Mission Since they won’t tell you when things are due, just assume they’re off solving world crises. Build your project goals around that mystery timeline. 🕵️♂️🌍 #TopSecret #ProjectMystery Step 2: Depend on the Indecisive Because relying on others who won’t commit is always fun, right? Document every “maybe” and “I’ll get back to you”—for accountability, of course. 📋 #TrustIssues #ItsFineReally #ItsOKImUsedToIt 😭 Step 3: Set Imaginary Deadlines Since real deadlines are a no-go, go ahead and make some up. Who doesn’t love scheduling tasks with a ✨wild guess✨? 🕰️ #ProfessionalPsychic #DeadlineByVibe Step 4: Send “Friendly Reminders” Ask again (and again). Maybe throw in some dramatic irony: “Just checking to see if you have any updates on that timeline. No pressure… just our entire project depends on it. 😅” 📧 #NoBigDeal #CasualReminder Step 5: Log Every Delay as a ‘Risk’ Write down each vague answer as a “possible risk.” That way, when things inevitably go sideways, you’ll have receipts. 🧾 #NotMyFault #CoverYourAssets Step 6: Pretend You Love Surprises If they won’t commit, just embrace the unknown! After all, who needs stability in a project? Just go with the flow, right? 🎢 #ProjectChaos #LivingOnTheEdge Step 7: Keep Everyone “In the Loop” Update your POAM like a journal entry. “Today I learned… still nothing! Can’t wait for tomorrow’s non-update!” 🔄 #LoopedIn #ItsTheJourneyNotTheDestination In the end, stay flexible. And by “flexible,” we mean prepare to hold the project together with duct tape and sarcasm. 🛠️😂 #POAMOrBust

GCH | I’m not sorry for my opinions, I earned them.

This may (or may not) be the single nerdiest thing I've ever posted... This month in GovCon Chatham House we had a fun purge requirement: build yourself a magic playing card that represents your favorite (or least favorite) person/place/thing in government<>contracting, or use image gen AI to do the same for a sticker. Stickers are coming, they take a little more work, but a lot of these are killer, we almost have enough for a commander deck...

Government & Industry leaders, how are you balancing your IT portfolio composition? 🚐💨 According to our community of collaborators and researchers, finding the right balance in government IT is essential for success. Whether utilizing custom/bespoke solutions, open-source software, or commercial/proprietary solutions, each approach has its strengths and trade-offs, and understanding when to apply each within the system of systems is crucial for achieving mission objectives and finding the right balance between flexibility, control, and sustainability. ⚙️ Commercial/Proprietary Solutions – Off-the-shelf options that promise rapid deployment and ease of use can be an excellent choice for organizations looking to implement technology quickly and deliver value fast. However, as agencies often tailor these products to fit their unique workflows and data models, they may end up exceeding recommended customization levels. This can lead to higher costs, increased complexity, and potential technical debt, making upgrades and integration with other systems more challenging. 🔑 Custom/Bespoke Solutions – These tailored solutions are designed specifically to meet the unique needs of government missions, offering complete control over security, compliance, and lifecycle management. Organizations can create software that perfectly aligns with their processes and requirements, enabling enhanced efficiency and effectiveness. While developing custom/bespoke solutions may require significant resources, the long-term benefits of a well-aligned system can drive innovation and success. 💻 Open Source Software – Open-source software provides incredible flexibility and adaptability, allowing organizations to modify and enhance the software to meet evolving needs. This approach fosters a culture of collaboration and innovation, empowering teams to build and improve solutions that truly serve their missions. With the right in-house expertise, open-source options can be highly cost-effective and sustainable, ensuring that agencies remain agile and responsive in a rapidly changing environment. We invite our community to share their experiences: How are you managing the balance between these different approaches? What strategies have you found effective in architecting your system to support your mission goals? 🧭 #InnovationInBalance #CommunityCollaboration #RightToolForTheJob #GovTech #MissionReady 🚀
