The NBA's 79th regular season tipped off last night, with several marquee matchups highlighting the opening slate. Get-in prices for home openers around the league reflect the excitement. The defending champion Boston Celtics, who will raise banner number 18 prior to hosting the New York Knicks in their 10/22 home opener, boast an NBA-leading get-in price of $286 at TD Garden. The Knicks return home to their 'Garden' on 10/25 for a matchup with the Indiana Pacers, where get-in prices rank 2nd league-wide at $221. College football fans had Saturday, October 12th, marked on their calendars since the summer. With multiple marquee matchups scheduled, the action on the field and the average ticket prices (ATP) on the secondary market lived up to the hype. In a classic SEC battle, Florida's visit to #8 Tennessee yielded an ATP of $362. A newly formed Big Ten matchup between #2 Ohio State and #3 Oregon saw a $553 ATP in Eugene. However, it was the Red River Rivalry between top ranked Texas and #18 Oklahoma that paced all action with an ATP of $729. Overall, week 7 produced an ATP of $201, which was 78% higher than the average of the first 6 weeks combined ($113). A popular strategy for the #NBA and #NHL to boost preseason ticket sales and attract new fans from different markets is to host games in arenas outside of their regular-season locations. Prolific 1 analyzed preseason secondary market sales, and found that games played at a neutral site produce an average ticket price (ATP) of $94 vs $52 at traditional home arenas, good for an 81% increase.
