If you're interested in charter cities such as the Honduran ZEDE program, this recent book by Joyce Brand uses Ciudad Morazán as a case study to explore the concept of decentralized, competitive governance:

I am supremely excited for today's big announcement by Balaji Srinivasan of a 90-day popup in Singapore Sep-Dec where participants: * Learn (emerging tech & founding communities) * Burn (calories with daily fitness & Blueprint diet) * Earn (crypto prizes for microtasks) * And have fun together, like living on campus at university. Tons of details on the announcement below: https://lnkd.in/gXY4RNST

This is mainly for NEOM, but every govt working on new cities needs to hear it: NEW CITIES NEED FOUNDERS NOT CONSULTANTS. If you want to tweak sth big that exists, by all means pay consultants hourly. But if you want to build sth new, you need founders with equity. Our corner of the city-building movement is rooted in startup DNA which has the world’s best practices for innovation. We get that there are non-startup approaches to development, for situations which need less innovation. You don’t need a founder to build a hydro dam. But if you want to make something that is different and better - to truly innovate - anyone from the startup world can tell you: you must start small, and consultants will never get you there. You must start small because of Gall’s Law: Every working complex system evolved from a working simple system. You may be able to replicate a working complex system in a new place, but ANYTHING NEW HAS TO START SMALL & GROW. It rarely works to make brand new big things. And you must have founders because to warp reality into a new shape by bringing forth some new way to create value is so hard that it is all-consuming. It takes people who are completely obsessed with one problem that fills their entire mind & determines their financial future. A consultant with other current, past, or future projects, a high hourly rate & no desperate personal need to succeed just can’t do it. Just try to imagine any of FAANG being created by consultants. You can’t. It’s unimaginable! So if you actually want to build something different and better than anything that currently exists, founders are your only option. Here at Pronomos Capital, we invest in the founders building companies like Próspera ,Praxis, Itana, and many more. When we get a city pitch w/o a founding team, to us that’s a hobby, not a company. We wish the hobbyists luck & genuinely hope they eventually start a company. But as a venture fund, we don’t invest in hobbies. If this approach resonates, give us a follow to keep learning more.

Great essay by Jonathan Hillis on path from dinners to group houses to villages to cities to states. When ppl think of the space, it's often big visible L1s like Próspera, and they forget bottom-up L2 communities like Cabin. Platforms need apps & charter cities need citizens & companies. Recruiting ppl individually is often too onerous for an L1 platform (though if you can pull it off like Praxis it's a big edge). Hence the critical role of L2s that aggregate demand by building communities. At Pronomos Capital we also see another model (primarily in Africa) where the draw is economics not community. Residents come because there are more and better jobs (the primary driver of migration), which they can get without leaving their homeland.
