  • October is Liver Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of early detection for better treatment outcomes. Though early-stage liver cancer often lacks symptoms, it can manifest as unexplained weight loss, appetite loss, upper abdominal or back pain, nausea and jaundice (yellowing of the skin.) Earlier this year, liver and pancreas oncology surgeons Jon Gerry, M.D., and John Creasy, M.D., joined our expanded Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Cancer Program. They stopped by KATU's Afternoon Live to discuss liver cancer warning signs and stress the importance of observing any changes in your health. • Providence Cancer Institute caregivers had the honor of presenting the Portland Thorns FC crest on the pitch at the beginning of a match in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Night and International Day of the Girl. Decked out in special pink shirts, 35 caregivers took the field for the crest presentation and then cheered on the Thorns. Thank you to everyone who participated in this fun and important event!

  • In recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Zheng Z. Topp, M.D., joined KATU News AMNW to share important reminders about screenings and prevention. Dr. Topp is an experienced hematologist-oncologist at Providence Cancer Institute with a special focus on the care of patients with breast cancer. She is committed to empowering her patients by encouraging breast health awareness. “Be aware of your body. If there is a lump, a swelling, a rash, don’t ignore it,” says Dr. Topp. “There are many incidences of my patients receiving a diagnosis between mammograms or before their first mammogram because they felt something and brought it to someone’s attention.” To learn more about breast cancer care, visit https://lnkd.in/g5gMbFtk. #BreastCancerAwareness

  • October 15 is Lobular Breast Cancer Day, shining a light on invasive lobular cancer (ILC) which accounts for 15% of breast cancer cases, making it the second most prevalent form of this disease. The goal of this day is to emphasize the need for more research and specialized treatments for this frequently overlooked form of breast cancer. ILC starts in the milk-producing glands of the breast and spreads to nearby tissue. Unlike other forms, it doesn't form lumps but may cause hard or thickened areas, an inverted nipple, skin dimpling, changes in breast size or shape, warmth or redness, nipple discharge, and pain. Its unique characteristics make it harder to detect with mammography, often leading to later diagnoses. (ILC fact sheet: https://lnkd.in/e7WDNVpG) Providence breast cancer specialist and scientist Sasha Stanton MD PhD is deeply committed to educating people about ILC. She volunteers with the Lobular Breast Cancer Alliance Inc., founded by one of her patients, and is working to develop a preventative vaccine for lobular breast cancer thanks to a grant from the Kuni Foundation. (video: Why Clinical Trial Participation is Important to Advance Breast Cancer Treatment https://lnkd.in/eQPUtFnn). The Lobular Breast Cancer Alliance provides comprehensive information and resources about ILC. For more information, visit https://lnkd.in/ew8BzXFG. If you have questions for Dr. Stanton, you can reach her at sasha.stanton@providence.org.
