About us
The Quality of Life Initiative supports local authorities and decision makers to understand how their current investment and policy priorities improve the well being and quality of life of the individuals and communities they serve and how to make tangible, long term improvements in the lives of urban populations. The Initiative aims to develop a comprehensive, human-centric concept of quality of life including objective and subjective factors and to promote it as a primary urban development objective. The three year project includes the development of a performance monitoring tool or Index incorporating innovative data gathering techniques for authorities in cities and towns worldwide to measure their progress and the gaps in improving the quality of life. The globally relevant, locally applicable Index is being created through wide ranging consultations and will be aligned with the Urban Monitoring Framework (UMF), The Initiative is being implemented by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the UN agency focused on sustainable urban development. Human well being has been identified as one of the key transformative shifts needed to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the Quality of Life Index will contribute by helping subnational governments in urban areas to achieve progress towards a prosperous and fulfilling life for individuals and communities. ❣️Valuing what matters❣️ I’m honored to be speaking at the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt and the Quality of Life Initiative session where we’ll delve into a topic that deeply influences our lives, often without us realizing it: how the design of our cities impacts our physical and mental health. Too often, health and well-being are overlooked in urban planning and design, yet they are fundamental to creating cities where people truly thrive. A healthy city isn’t just about access to healthcare; it requires everything from clean water and sanitation to green spaces, smart data use, and thoughtful infrastructure that promotes an active, balanced lifestyle. In this special session, we’ll explore how we can “future-proof” our urban environments by making health and well-being central to our planning decisions. By designing with people in mind—putting quality of life at the heart of urban sustainability—we can create cities that not only respond to health challenges but actively promote resilience, social connection, and environmental stewardship. Together with health professionals, urban planners, and well-being experts, we’ll discuss essential questions: 📍What would cities look like if they were designed explicitly to promote health and well-being? 📍How can urban data and individual metrics help us tailor cities for a healthier future? 📍And, how might storytellers work with urban planners to craft spaces that connect us, to each other and to nature? As we share inspiring success stories and tangible examples, we’ll create a roadmap for people-centered policies, investments, and resilient infrastructure that can transform cities worldwide. The design of our cities shapes our lives. By placing health at the core, we can build inclusive, vibrant communities that thrive today and into the future. Looking forward to an inspiring conversation at the World Urban Forum! #qualityoflife #urbanplanning #futurecities #leadership

🇦🇷 Argentina has a strong tradition in the formation of #statistical #data 📊, but… how can we address the new challenges? 🤔 Urban expert Dr. María Eugenia Goicoechea, Coordinator of Urban Indicators at Local Urban Observatory of Buenos Aires, in the latest roundtable in Bilbao, Spain 🇪🇸, emphasizes the importance of involving civil society, incorporating #BigData and geographical data #analysis, and adding them to existing national #statistics. The biggest challenge? Coordination between municipal, provincial, and national governments, with the provincial government playing a key role as the mediator between these levels. 🎥 Don't miss the details in the video! #Innovation #QualityOfLife #DataGovernance برنامج جودة الحياة | Quality of Life Program UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) UN in Saudi Arabia Robert Ndugwa, eduardo moreno, Kawther AlKhudairy, Dilek Fraisl, Ali Almelhem, Swajan Hayder, Leonardo Luiz dos Santos, Kari Wolanski, Mónica Pinzon, Abdelnaser Obeidat, Meirambek Zhumadildin, Undral Lkhagva, Otja Tjipetekera, Nyirimanzi Jean Claude, Tanja Obradovic, Miljana Medarov Vujaklija, Graeme Gotz, Antonio Argüeso Jiménez, Samira Ouadday, Mert Mesut SELÇUK, Robert Hermans, Philipp U., Piyushimita (Vonu) Thakuriah, Ismail Lubbad, Andrew Schmidt, Dr. Kyle Farrell, Angela Kiconco, Roza Mamuye Bora, Francine Melchioretto, Norah Alyusuf, Réka Kemény Luis Herrera Favela
