The Transformation of German Politics The state election results in eastern Germany this month mark a tectonic shift in Germany’s political configuration. The surge in support for the rightwing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the even more striking rise from nowhere of the leftwing Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) reflect deepening public dissatisfaction with levels of immigration, support for Ukraine, and the state of the economy. According to polls across Germany, support for the parties of the existing governing coalition is sinking fast. If this pattern is sustained, next year’s national elections will lead to radical changes in key German policies. To discuss the election results, join us for a conversation featuring Molly O’Neal, non-resident fellow at the Quincy Institute and former U.S. Foreign Service Officer, Wolfgang Streeck, Emeritus Director at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies, …

Book Talk – Diplomat’s Dictionary In his classic work Diplomat’s Dictionary, Ambassador Chas Freeman sets out a collection of definitions of the diplomatic craft and terminology; part Talleyrand, and part Ambrose Bierce. First published in 1994, this remains the most acute, the wittiest and the pithiest of all introductions to the practice of diplomacy. In an era when it sometimes seems that the US and Europe possess not diplomats but anti-diplomats, its lessons are more important than ever. To discuss the book and its lessons, Ambassador Freeman will be joined by Anatol Lieven, director of the Eurasia program at the Quincy Institute. The conversation will take place on Wednesday, September 18th from 12:00 – 1:00 PM Eastern. The Quincy Institute has assembled a panel of distinguished experts to begin a discussion of these issues, as Republican and Democratic presidential contenders begin to puzzle through their own po…

Quincy Research Fellow and former Foreign Affairs Officer at the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor’s Office of Near Eastern Affairs, Annelle Sheline, PhD, recently appeared on C-SPAN to discuss the war in Gaza. As Annelle explains, "Israel is trying to wipe out the Palestinian population of Gaza." Thus, in order to uphold American law, "the U.S. needs to cut off weapons to Israel." https://lnkd.in/gxHuGXeE

In a recent C-SPAN appearance Quincy's Director of Grand Strategy, George Beebe, described the "niche" we as a think tank seek to fill. "It's attempting not to be partisan-not to be Republican or Democrat-but to advance a national interest based, restraint-oriented foreign policy, that tries to avoid repeating the kinds of mistakes that we got into over the last several decades-these so-called "forever wars" that we could into but no get out of-and really not attempt to transform the world into some sort of miniature version of the United States, but to focus on what is most important for the U.S. people to be secure and prosperous." Well said! https://lnkd.in/gPt_uaSz

What if Iran Gets the Bomb? The Biden administration, along with outside experts, assesses that Iran could build a nuclear weapon very quickly — if chose to do so. Whether and under what conditions Iran would cross the line is unknown. Equally unclear is how Tehran would integrate a nuclear weapons capability into its over all security strategy. What would Iran’s leaders believe nuclear weapons would do for them? And how would they wield them? These uncertainties are compounded by unknowns regarding the reactions of regional states, especially Israel and Saudi Arabia, and powerful global players, including the United States. At a moment when Iran and Israel have attacked each other’s territory with ballistic missiles, these questions are more than just thought exercises. And the implications go beyond the Middle East as states under the shadow of perceived aggressors contemplate building nuclear weapons themselve…
