Do tough conversations damage relationships? Or is it avoiding them that hurts relationships? As a leader, you want to care personally and challenge directly. Says Jason Rosoff. He is the CEO of Radical Candor which he co-founded with author Kim Scott who wrote the famous book with the same name. Together, they help leaders improve workplace communication. Jason is this week’s guest on my Speak Like a CEO podcast. He’s passionate about balancing care and challenge to build trust and growth. Here are 5 insights by Jason that help you give feedback without destroying relationships: 1 - Avoiding Tough Conversations Can Destroy Relationships 2 - Feedback Must Be Personal and Direct 3 - Reframe Feedback as an Experiment 4 - “Praise is the accelerator, and criticism is the brake... you need both.” 5 - Gauge the Reaction: Be present for whatever response might come back... and adjust the conversation to meet that response. The upshot: care personally and challenge directly. ♻ Please share to help your network and follow me Oliver Aust for daily tips on leadership communication.

"These kinds of checks and balances are the only way to ensure you're continually optimizing for collaboration instead of coercion. They help you embody true leadership and resist the lure of authoritarianism."
As I wrote for my recent op-ed in 'The New York Times' about the pitfalls of founder mode, "Emotional dysregulation, bullying and bloviating are not leadership attributes. People who cannot manage themselves should not manage others." But as we all know, there are many people in positions of power who abuse it. Here's how to address the accountability gap. #foundermode #radicalrespect #theceotrap #radicalcandor #leadership #workplaceculture #bullyingprevention

Here’s a passage from Radical Candor about Ruinous Empathy. Early in my career, I learned some tough lessons - like the story of Bob, where I avoided giving feedback until it was too late. Ruinous Empathy happens when you care personally but fail to challenge directly. It also shows up when leaders avoid asking for feedback because it feels uncomfortable. The first step in Radical Candor is to solicit criticism, even when it feels awkward. Don’t let discomfort stop you - be compassionately candid and create a space where everyone can grow. How do you push through the discomfort to give or receive feedback? #RadicalCandor #Leadership #Feedback #GrowthMindset #CompassionateCandor
