All students deserve an education that affirms who they are and prepares them to be leaders today and tomorrow. But right now, the public school system is falling short of its promise to be an opportunity maker for all students. This new report from our partners TNTP identifies a group of #OpportunityMakers—a set of trajectory-changing schools where students who are behind not only catch up but thrive. One essential element of their success is building a culture of belonging. With so many challenges facing our public schools, this report offers a roadmap to help schools better serve their students. https://lnkd.in/dYy92q4k

Our public schools are as segregated today as they were in the 1960s. This powerful segment from ABC News highlights the impact this has on students like Ava, a high school junior who travels more than an hour on the bus every day to a more diverse and better resourced school. Our partners Brown's Promise are working to address segregation and resource inequity for students so that our public schools fulfill their promise of serving as engines of opportunity for all students. https://lnkd.in/gYQDcAy6

Right now, our higher education system does not value teaching as a critical part of equitable student success. This The Washington Monthly piece highlights why that could—and should—change. https://lnkd.in/gH5NfHJ7

There is no doubt that AI is already changing education. Ensuring that this technology benefits all students will require thoughtful and holistic decision-making from policymakers and leaders. That's one reason we were proud to support this report exploring the landscape of AI in K-12 education and designed to help leaders take a comprehensive approach to incorporating AI into education.
I'm thrilled to announce the release of Bellwether's AI report: Learning Systems, exploring the nuanced opportunities and risks of AI in education. Please see the full three-part series, and let me know your thoughts! https://lnkd.in/gQDCgV8H We offer three core takeaways: 💪 The critical need for building strong capacity, in the development of knowledge, skills, policies, and diversity of leaders and contributors. 💻 The importance of developing a resilient infrastructure of data, benchmarks, and research to ensure that enthusiasm for innovation is matched by a commitment to security and quality. 🎯 The necessity of purposeful design that considers the diverse needs of all students, is grounded in learning science, and maintains the essential role of human relationships. I'm deeply grateful to the 50+ experts who lent their perspectives on this series, the AI Funder Collaborative for supporting this project, and to my amazing co-authors Michelle Croft, Brian Robinson, Ph.D, Mary Wells, Andrew Rotherham, and John Bailey for their partnership.

“We like to imagine progress as cinematic moments of triumph on the steps of the Supreme Court. But progress might also be nudged along in the tedium of legal briefs and defended in the bureaucracy of public records requests: a long, sustained, unglamorous grind of a fight.” This piece powerfully captures the critical work Democracy Forward has scaled to do in courtrooms and communities across the country in just seven years. Our education system has a big role to play in supporting students experiencing housing instability, as Barbara Duffield explains here. The first step in providing that support is identifying the students who need it, but that's something many schools and districts aren't set up to do well. That's why our partners at SchoolHouse Connection have compiled a new database that includes the overall number of students experiencing homelessness, breakdowns by race and ethnicity, and where students report staying. Last week, leaders from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), including Deputy Secretary Andrea Palm, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Jeff Hild, and Administration for Children and Families Commissioner Rebecca Jones Gaston, joined us in Tacoma to learn about the policies and programs that have helped contribute to Washington’s historic 40 percent drop in youth and young adult homelessness. This remarkable progress—which was made possible through collaboration between government, nonprofit, and philanthropic partners, a focus on equitable outcomes, and leadership by young people themselves—means 10,000 fewer young people are experiencing housing instability today than there were in 2016. The group heard from Governor Jay Inslee, First Lady Trudi Inslee, representatives from the Office of Homeless Youth, YMCA of Greater Seattle Social Impact Center, The Coffee Oasis, Cocoon House, and young leaders from The Mockingbird Society. The panelists’ message was clear: We have proven that we can move the needle on youth and young adult homelessness and we must continue investing in the policies and programs that we know are working to keep young people safely and stably housed. We’re grateful to our federal partners for taking the time to learn about our progress and to all of our local partners for their commitment to this work. Onward!

According to hispanicheritagemonth.gov: Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period. A Way Home America honors Hispanic & Latino,-e,-x youth as some of the most impacted when it comes to homelessness. We uplift BIPOC & LGBTQIA+ voices/needs when transforming public policy and advocacy.
