Forests play a crucial role in the fight against climate change by storing and sequestering massive amounts of carbon. Here’s a quick look at three types of forests that make a huge impact: 🌲 Frontier Forests – These forests massively reduce carbon emissions in the immediate future because they protect forests in imminent danger of destruction — a so-called "frontier" providing a protective barrier, keeping dense forest intact. 🦀 Super-Sequesterers – Forests inundated by water are particularly efficient sequesterers because the water blocks the oxygen required for carbon-releasing decomposition. These include flooded forests, swamp forests, peat forests and mangroves. 🌿 Carbon Vaults – These forests lock up carbon in large, tall, intact hardwood forests in perpetuity for a reasonable cost. These large trees store vast amounts of carbon in their wood, roots and soil, preventing huge amounts of carbon from being released. 📷 Deforestation by Richcarey from Getty Images #ClimateAction #ForestTypes #CarbonSequestration #Deforestation #ProtectForests

Early in July, two Rainforest Trust staff members, James Lewis, VP of Conservation, and Andrea Carneiro, Conservation Strategist for Latin America, travelled to the heart of the Brazilian Amazon 🌳 to visit communities deeply involved in conservation efforts in the region. As the largest rainforest on Earth, the Brazilian Amazon is infinitely important to biodiversity conservation, to our planet’s climate, and to the communities who live there and are sustained by its bounty. Working to protect as much as possible of this irreplaceable tropical biome before it is lost is a top priority for Rainforest Trust. Read the full story at https://lnkd.in/eyjVfZWk #ClimateAction #Deforestation #Biodiversity #Nature

Help Protect Jaguars and Giant Anteaters in Argentina 🌎 The Yungas forests of Argentina are home to incredible species like the Black-and-chestnut Eagle, Giant Anteater and Jaguar, but these rich ecosystems are threatened by logging and cattle ranching. Rainforest Trust and Fundación Rewilding Argentina are working to protect 11,990 acres of highly intact Yungas forest, filling a crucial gap between two national parks to safeguard key wildlife corridors. This project will prevent deforestation, protect endangered species, and support local communities in building an economy based on nature tourism, helping them resist pressures from logging interests. Protected: Mozambique's Greater Gorongosa Landscape Gorongosa National Park is one of Africa’s top conservation success stories, providing vital habitat for endangered species like African Wild Dogs, Grey Crowned Cranes, and Savannah Elephants. To combat threats from poaching and development, Rainforest Trust and the Gorongosa Restoration Project helped establish the 158,888-acre Cheringoma Community Conservation Area in April 2023. This is the first step in creating a wildlife corridor linking Gorongosa to the Marromeu Reserve. Already, Rainforest Trust and Gorongosa Restoration Project have begun work on a second project to safeguard approximately a quarter million additional acres in the region. Thanks to our donors, these funds have provided essential support for both of these projects! Wildfires continue to rage in South America.🔥 River dolphins are dying, Hyacinth Macaw nests are lost to flames, and countless animals are suffering from burns and injuries as they flee the flames across Brazil and beyond. The fires are so large the smoke can be seen from space, grounding flights, closing schools, and devastating wildlife, habitats, and communities. With over 3 million acres of the Pantanal and 10% of Bolivia burned this year, the carbon released is further fuelling climate change. You can DOUBLE your impact today! Donations to Rainforest Trust’s projects will help protect critical habitats and strengthen local partners’ ability to manage and prevent future fires. The Pantanal is the world’s largest wetland, covering over 43.5 million acres across Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay — that’s an area twice the size of Austria. This vast ecosystem is home to incredible biodiversity, including Hyacinth Macaws 🦜, the densest population of Jaguars 🐆, and a crucial refuge for Giant Otters 🦦. The Pantanal has become the second most popular tourism site in South America (after the Galapagos) and although significant portions of the Pantanal, particularly in Brazil, remain relatively pristine and untouched by human activities, only 4.6% is currently protected. Vast wetland is under increasing pressure for agricultural conversion, with deforestation on the rise. Climate change contributes to a drying trend that negatively impacts wildlife and human communities, and has led to the unusually early and intense blazes in the region. This year, Rainforest Trust celebrated a major milestone: 50 million acres of habitat protected! Yet, even as we celebrate, tropical forests are burning, and vital habitats in the most biodiverse regions are being lost to commercial interests. Deforestation remains a leading cause of environmental destruction. That’s why, at Rainforest Trust UK, we are looking “beyond the 50” and inviting you to join us in the fight to protect millions more acres. Email us at UK@RainforestTrust.org to enquire about including Rainforest Trust UK as a beneficiary in your Will and ensuring that, together, we will continue to protect millions more acres of habitat well into the future. 🌱 #ConservationUK #LegacyDonation #ProtectBiodiversity #EndDeforestation #ClimateAction

In the Pantanal wetlands of Brazil, years of drought, high temperatures, and strong winds have caused intense fires that are shattering historical records and killing rare wildlife. Since January, over 3 million acres have burned. Rainforest Trust’s local partner, Onçafari, right now has staff and volunteers on the front lines fighting the fires, protecting their wildlife reserves, and rescuing animals that require veterinary care. Rainforest Trust is working with Onçafari to establish an important new reserve in another area of the Pantanal – as yet not directly impacted by fires – the new 326,179-acre Taquari Wetlands State Park. This new reserve will support a long-term strategy to fortify a critical wildlife corridor in the Pantanal, a goal that is becoming more critical every day, to give wildlife increased access to safe habitat. Donate now to help establish this new preserve, and provide significant opportunities for local experts to prepare for the growing threat of wildfires in the Pantanal: https://lnkd.in/gJ3b68XP 📽️: Footage of fires in the Pantanal, courtesy of Onçafari. #deforestation #climateemergency #climatecrisis
