About us
Rainier Athletes' mission is to affirm our youth’s sense of purpose and belonging by intentionally connecting their community of teachers, coaches, families, and mentors. Powered by a quickly growing community of mentors, the organization works collaboratively to mobilize a network of teachers, coaches, mentors, and families around the community's youth furthest from educational and social justice, ultimately cultivating a more inclusive environment for all. Each day of the school week, over 250 Bellevue School District teachers lean on the Rainier Athletes model in their classrooms to strengthen connections with some of their students. Each student is fully sponsored year-round to participate in extracurricular activities, paired with a dedicated mentor who meets with them weekly, and motivated to achieve both on and off the field through Rainier Athletes’ classroom engagement and self-advocacy model. Rainier Athletes makes a long-term investment in each student, first selecting a students in fifth grade and continuing support through high school graduation.

Did you know? RA mentor/mentee weekly check-ins continue during the summer to ensure that each student feels a sense of belonging and connection year round. Meet Steph, one of our amazing every-week-all-year-round mentors! Steph is a voracious reader - like 50+ books a year! She brings that pursuit of knowledge to her relationship with her mentee, making sure they’re always learning from each other: “My mentee is very good at math, I’m not. I’m very good at public speaking, she prefers not to. We joke that I’m helping her learn to be an adult, and she’s helping me learn to be a kid again.”

For the 4th year in a row, Amazon and Ascend Hospitality Group transformed the Amazon Fresh parking lot into a back-to-school block party. The community vibes were strong, with local families and organizations jamming to a live DJ, playing games, and sharing lunch from Famous Dave’s BBQ. 100 RA students took home fully stocked backpacks, customized with keychains, patches, and airbrush art - a reminder that the community really does have their back as the new school year starts. 📸: Jason Goldfarb Photography

Matching the “the RA way” means prioritizing pairing students with mentors who share lived experience, languages, and cultures. One of the ways we do this is through our corporate partners' Hispanic/Latinx employee affinity groups (shoutout Amazon and BECU!). Does your employer have a group we can visit to share about the mentoring experience? Read about how students seeing themselves in this mentors leads to more impactful and lasting relationships on the RA blog: https://loom.ly/O5LkExg
