Rotary Music Garden at Moore Square The Rotary Clubs of the Raleigh area have been awarded a Rotary International matching grant to support the creation of an exciting new addition to Downtown Raleigh: The Rotary Music Garden. This innovative project, developed in partnership with the City of Raleigh Municipal Government Parks Recreation and Cultural Resources, is scheduled for completion in March 2025. The Rotary Music Garden will feature permanent, interactive outdoor musical play equipment, such as drums and xylophones, designed to be ADA-accessible. The installation will allow visitors of all ages and abilities to experience the joy of music through interactive play, creating a unique and inclusive space in Raleigh’s public parks. This new music garden will further enhance the area’s appeal by complementing the ongoing renovations at the neighboring Marbles Kids Museum, helping to position Downtown Raleigh Alliance as a vibrant, community-friendly destination. “The Rotary Music Garden will be a dynamic space where music, play, and community intersect. It is a shining example of how our local Rotary Clubs and the City of Raleigh can collaborate to create something truly special for all to enjoy,” said Audrey Reed, President of the Crabtree Rotary Club and Rotary Music Garden Project Lead.

Western North Carolina's Rotary District 7670 Governor Elect Alpo Portelli has told us that sending money 💵 is more helpful right now than sending supplies. If your club wants to send supplies, please let our District Governor Elect Lisa Higginbotham, CRM know what items you plan to send. Lisa will be coordinating our District response with Alpo. Follow the Rotary District 7710 Facebook page, for regular updates from Alpo on the situation and what is needed. The District Council is exploring ways to increase our financial impact and strategizing on how our clubs can help rebuild the areas in Western NC. District leaders will share more information as the situation stabilizes. In the meantime, here are two ways you can donate: Send donations directly to District 7670, which helps the Western NC counties from Cherokee to Watauga. https://lnkd.in/e5Tn-xNb photo credit: Andrew Nelles / The Tennessean

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we heard from American Cancer Society's Richard Averitte yesterday. With a patient advocacy, research and support for survivors, ACS is a resource to everyone. Here are a couple of our club's Men Wear Pink participants, Jean-Luke Dubas and Diamonte Sanders flanking Richard. #serviceaboveself #community

Raleigh Rotarian Charles King coordinated quickly with Julian Bunn. Julian visited the club on Monday and shared, “Many of these families have lived in their homes for literally generations. The homes stayed for many decades at 20 feet above the water’s highest reaches. With Helene, the water rose 50 feet. Everything was lost. Further, the rushing waters washing out of the hillsides meant that the higher up homes had no support and they crashed into the river as well.” While large organizations and government agencies are focused on the larger towns, the residents of the remote communities are hurting just as badly. Bunn shared with the Rotary Club, “The last mile – and sometimes it’s five miles – can only be made by three ways: four-wheeler, horse, or mule.” A call went out over the weekend to Rotary Club of Raleigh members to bring items from a provided list. The Club responded strongly and on Monday, a mound of supplies started piling up outside the meeting place for the Rotary Club. The supplies sent by the Raleigh Rotarians will initially go to the Newland, NC Baptist Church where they will be organized and then distributed to the most needy individuals and communities – by whatever transportation means as necessary. Rotary Club of Raleigh president, Eric L. Larsen stated, “Look, there will be massive projects in this recovery: rebuilding roads and bridges, hauling away an inconceivable amount of mud and debris, deciding what to do with millions of board-feet of lumber from downed trees, and deciding how to rebuild a town from scratch. But right now our Club is focused differently. We are addressing the human stories: a remote family staying with relatives and having no water or food until Rotary showed up, the mom of a newborn with no diapers until Rotary showed up, cleaning up the horrific mess left behind by the storm with no sanitation products to wash up with after the day of work until Rotary showed up. In these small ways, Rotary is making a difference.” Past Rotary District 7710 Governor Nathan Thomas, District Foundation Chair Rev. Patrick Rooney, and Rotary Club of Raleigh Service Director, Richard Averitte will be coordinating the Club’s ongoing response to this disaster. Said Service Director Averitte, “This is not a one-time mercy mission. We will need to be engaged for the long term and we are committed to doing that.” Shown Weston Moore and Julian Bunn

We have a unique opportunity to aid our fellow North Carolinians who are recovering from life-altering flooding in the North Carolina Mountains. Thanks for being #PeopleOfAction. Raleigh Rotarian Charles King, a resident of the high country, has arranged for a trailer to take supplies west where they will be distributed by a church that has a process already in place. Today we loaded about ¼ of the trailer with many cases of bottled water that our Club had in storage. There is plenty of room left in the trailer– and that is where YOU come in. #TheMagicOfRotary At Monday’s meeting, the trailer will be on site. Please bring items to send west on Tuesday. In addition, Rotary District 7710 Governor Jeff Blass and Past DG Nathan Thomas in our Club have been in touch with the western NC DG. Also our Club’s Service Chair, Richard Averitte is working with people to transport and deliver supplies too, possibly in some of the most remote areas. All three of these initiatives need your participation. Requested items are: Toilet Paper Paper Towels Paper Plates Cups Large heavy duty trash bags Red Bull (for the rescue workers) Baby Formula Baby Food Diapers Cleaning Supplies Hand Sanitizer Stable food Ramen Noodles Feminine hygiene products
